One of the most noteworthy monuments in Kortrijk is the "Maiden of Flanders", the monument erected in commemoration of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, that took place in Kortrijk on 11th July 1302.

We had stopped off in Kortrijk in 2002 as we had to change trains there to go to Oudenaarde, but on that occasion it was foggy and we could not see much of the place, so we decided to have a proper look round some time.
Kortrijk also has its own speciality cake - the "Kalletaart", which is named after one of the Belfry figures.
Kortrijk is highly recommended for a visit, especially to people on holiday who want to see an area of Belgium which is not packed out with tourists.

The shopping in Kortrijk is amazing, there are beautiful upscale clothing and shoe shops, nice bakeries and four chocolate shops within a block of our hotel, all of which provided a huge temptation to explore and shop, but there was no time to take it all in, as we had a race to prepare for.
With the speeds high, it made it a little easier to hold position, but I was happy when we finally hit the hills, as each one thinned the peloton and reduced the nervousness in the bunch.
