Chosen through a competition, the Maori flag uses fl to represent Te Korekore or potential being, white to represent Te Ao Marama to represent the physical world, red to represent Te Whei Ao, the realm of coming into being and the Koru, a curl representing the unfolding of new life.

The Koru Flag has been proposed as a secondary flag for New Zealand (An independent country within the British Commonwealth; achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1907; known for sheep and spectacular scenery).
The current flag is a constant reminder of British colonialism (Exploitation by a stronger country of weaker one; the use of the weaker country's resources to strengthen and enrich the stronger country), and many New Zealand natives feel that it does not truly represent their culture.
There is a fern green spiral which starts by taking up the entire width of the flag but decreases gradually, splitting it diagonally and finally curling up into a spiral (Flying downward in a helical path with a large radius) on the right side.

This flag is likely to be seen fluttering from the mast stays of the yacht of an aging hippy, or from a rough stake in the ground next to a meditation retreat in the “bush” (NZ for forest).

Flags are supposed to represent the foundation of nations, they are not supposed to be a trademark symbol, although often with sufficient exposure that is a welcome side-effect.
I agree with DPF and reckon your sense of proportion is surreal.
As to the history of the NZ Flag, the website you reference clearly states that the choice of design was precipitated by a law requiring colonies to identify their ships appropriately.

A Flag for today shold be something that bonds Kiwis together culturally and unless your stuck in the 1950s Life in New Zealand no longer revolves around Rugby and other sports.
A True New Zealand Flag would be one that REPRESENTS New Zealands away from the sports field - A Koru for instance would be a far better choice for a flag than a corporate logo designed by some advertising exec who has simply gone to pot over our nations future.
One flag i have seen for myself features a red and fl background with a Koru running through the middle and the southern cross constellation at the top, this makes me feel proud to be a kiwi more than the fl flag with a fern in the middle.

I like Turi Park's exploration of the potential of the Gordon Walters koru which is capable of development in many directions - when care is taken to understand and master of the visual language which is his legacy.
All I want to demonstrate here is that this koru flag design provides the basis for an emergent national identity system - not only a flag, not a logo, not an emblem, but a visual language that can evolve infinitely in the hands of good designers.

This is the first of the two flags based on Maori designs, and has gained considerable popularity in the northern North Island (where most of the Maori population is found).
I'm afraid I don't know much of the history of this flag, other than the fact that the three colours (red, white and fl) are the traditional colours of Maori art (having been the three colour dyes that could be made from local earth and plants).
The province of Otago has no official flag, although one that is sometimes used (representing this area's Scottish settlement and the mineral wealth of the region is the Scottish flag (Azure, a saltire Argent) with the white of the saltire replaced with gold.

I wouldn't be able to argue that our flag has stood the test of time - because the flag as we know it is just that and we haven't been able/allowed to change it.
Canada changed their flag a few years back (with controversy too cos this is always to be expected) to the simple maple leaf - and it is widely recognised today and well liked.
The Listener had a flag with a silver fern on it, but it was quite stink and I have seen better one's before.

Regarding Koru, I have not done a comparasion to my old TC's but in Jan I was able to access RCC in SFO and LGA, and Maple Leaf in YYZ and YVR no problems.
Incidentally, a couple of years back I joined Koru for life - for a variety of reasons and when I was not flying enough to get silver and defintely never thought I would get near to gold (comp Koru) under the old scheme and found that in terms of service it paid for itself.
