Koryu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Koryu (古流 koryū) is a Japanese word that translates literally as "old school" or "old tradition".
While arts post dating this event (gendai budo such as judo, kendo, iaido and aikido) are valued either as sports or arts for self-improvement, the koryu are the teachings of a feudal military culture.
Koryu styles often contain both armed fighting with several different weapons and unarmed techniques.

Another common misunderstanding among those who have not trained in a koryu in Japan, is that iaijutsu (combative sword-drawing) came from a situation where one was fighting with another weapon, such as a bow or spear, that when broken in the fracas, forced one to quickly draw his sword, and it became damaged.
Koryu deshi, or disciples, do not wield a sword to look beautiful, or merely to be alone with their swords and their own minds.
Such a group of so called koryu "instructors" will only present a very distorted view of the true koryu-- "fragile" living arts that are rarely understood even in their country of origin and which are taught on a limited basis, as a means of preserving a Japanese cultural asset.

To uderstand and pay homage to a koryu is to be part of a long stem of family, this is not something which the Western world is ready to embrace just yet.
It is true that their are several exponents of koryu around the Western world, but I do feel that it is a good thing that the Western representatives are only aloud to teach a very finite amount of the curriculum because this way the development of the ryuha can be monitored.
There are a few koryu in Japan that have gone past their sell-by-date and have lost almost all of their combative meanings and some people's opinons are that they "deserve" to go extinct.

The stream of the koryu bujutsu, or classical martial traditions, flows down to us across more than four centuries, and provides a unique vehicle for both reflecting on the past and actualizing the present.
Watching demonstrations of the koryu, talking with and listening to experienced practitioners and instructors, and reading and reflecting on the histories and lessons handed down from the past are a few of the more readily accessible approaches.
In koryu, as in Japan in general, fl and white can often both be true simultaneously, giving rise to a rich variety of grays.

I have never read or heard a koryu exponent claiming the superiority of his or her ryu and the bulwark of this argument would be considerably strengthened if the critics would ever cite a specific instance of this attitude being expressed.
"Koryu snobs believe their arts are the 'real thing' and modern budo forms are inferior in technique, spirit, and quality." Again, this common charge doesn't make much sense in light of the fact that, as was just noted, nearly all koryu exponents in the West are also practitioners of modern budo forms as well.
Koryu adherents are not generally focused on the documentation of their ryu because those documents are taken as a matter of fact.

The difference is that many people outside of koryu don't understand that some koryu jujutsu traditions do have randori, or that many are practised alongside judo so that a heavy randori element is involved in regular practice.
Koryu jujutsu is gentle on the practicioner using the techniques, since economical, simple techniques are used, but not gentle on the person who is on the recieving end.
A lot of koryu jujutsu ryuha still retain a rather combative and aggressive mindset which is not usually found with modern, generic self defence oriented jujutsu styles.

 PT: Why Koryu? Kim Taylor
Koryu, for those who aren't concerned with the esoterica of the Japanese weapon arts, means "old school" and is usually defined as those arts formed before the Meiji resoration, pre 1868.
Learning a koryu means learning from a very small set of potential instructors, a tiny bit at a time (unless you actually live near one of the instructors in which case it makes sense to study it).
In the rarely seen and practiced koryu you may be able to say "I practice that and you don't" but in the more "common" arts you get to say "I'm learning, and will likely keep learning for the rest of my life".
