Kōsaka Masanobu is known to have openly criticized Katsuyori numerous times.
Because of this, Kosaka was forced to "retire" from service in 1578 and died later from illness.
In popular culture, especially in video games, Kōsaka Masanobu is often seen wearing a full kabuto helmet with a menpō.

) is a record of the military exploits of the Takeda family, compiled largely by the Takeda vassal Kōsaka Danjō Masanobu, and completed in 1616 by Obata Kagenori.
Sections by Kosaka Masanobu express his views on the warrior code in relation to the connection between lord and vassal.
He compares Shingen to the ideal lord, and contrasts him to his son Takeda Katsuyori, whose poor leadership led quickly to the downfall of the clan.

Shingen accordingly took 8,000 men to Kawanakajima while Kosaka Masanobu and Baba Nobufusa led 12,000 to Saijo; unfortunatly for the Takeda, Kenshin learned of Shingen's movements and acted to thwart his plans.
He took his own army off Saijo ahead of Kosaka and Baba and asualted Shingen's force at dawn.
The battle is recorded as having been especially bloody, and supposedly featured a brief personal combat between Kenshin and Shingen - though this may be regarded as a colorful legend.
