The bridge incorporated the use of a super structure this year, which allows the deflection of the bridge at the center to be reduced.

This bridge was built in 1838 and used to span the Bushwick Creek (now filled in), connecting fledgling Greenpoint to its neighbor to the south, the City of Williamsburg, and hence the City of Brooklyn beyond.
It was a short trip to the bridge, but we had to wait for a time for the bridge to be opened.
Then as the bridge opens, the structure of the bridge swings perpendicularly to its closed position to become parallel to the banks of Kill, forming a channel on either side for boats to pass.

THADDEUS KOSCIUSZKO - A Polish Son of Liberty, Hero of the American Revolution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Kosciusko, a romantic idealist from a country under Russian domination, was deeply influenced by the liberal principles of Thomas Jefferson on the inherent right of men to redress political injustice and, in freedom, to pursue personal fulfillment.
Kosciusko's exploration of the Carolina wilderness, location of defensible campsites and construction of a river fleet enabled General Greene to maneuver swiftly and effectively against Cornwallis, leading to the British commander's subsequent encirclement at Yorktown.
It was during Kosciusko's service in the South that we first hear of his reaction to the "peculiar" institution of slavery which, in its contradiction of the principles of the Revolution, must have puzzled the young idealist.

MTR 37, Twinning the BQE's Kosciusko Bridge
NY Newsday reported this week that the NY State Dept. of Transportation is eyeing construction of a new $100 million bridge alongside the Brooklyn-Queens Kosciusko Bridge, where the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278) crosses Newtown Creek.
While the article focused primarily on the new bridge's role relieving congestion during reconstruction of that portion of the BQE, scheduled to start in 2000, the bridge would clearly remain long after the road work is done.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council Transportation Improvement Program lists the Kosciusko project as a rehabilitation, and says it is therefore exempt from air pollution considerations, but the new bridge would clearly represent a major addition of capacity on I-278.
