Kosciuszko National Park is one of the world’s great national parks, and the largest in New South Wales.
Kosciuszko Biosphere Reserve is located 500 km southwest of Sydney at approximately 36°30'S, 148°15'E. It contains the highest mountains in Australia, including 250 km2 of alpine and 1,065 km2 of subalpine vegetation, and all New South Wales ski fields.
Kosciuszko Biosphere Reserve straddles the Great Dividing Range (locally known as the Snowy Mountains) and is the main water catchment for the headwaters of the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers (both flowing towards the west) and the Snowy River flowing to the south.

Kosciuszko National Park is home to most of Australia's alpine areas, although it is not high enough to receive an all year round cover of snow, the season has been know to last (for XC skiers) for up to seven months, giving plenty of time for every to enjoy the wonders of this area.
At the northern end of the park, is Mount Selwyn Ski Resort, slightly smaller, (and cheaper lift tickets) than the others, also with a shorter season.
History: The area had been used by Aborigines quite extemsively during the summer, for at least a few thousand years, signs of their occupation have been found park wide, some including graves, scarred trees, cave paintings and evidence of moth feasts.

A community group in the Snowy Mountains says a proposal to close a number of recreational areas in the Kosciuszko National Park is linked to plans to build a new dam for Canberra residents.
BUG has also attacked the national parks service over the timetable for public comment on the new draft plan of management, saying it was deliberately set across the Christmas holiday period when many people are away and unable to provide detailled submissions.
One of the proposals being considered for the draft plan of management of the park is to restrict access to at least three areas in the far south and northern end of the park.

The more popular area for the day tripers is the southern area of the park, where Mt Kosciuszko is the destination.
A region favoured by bushwalkers is The Jagungal Wilderness, in the centre of the park.
