  Complex German Games
In fact, there were four games called, originally enough, the "big four" that any German game collector worthy of the title was supposed to have in their collection.
Given the amount of development time that goes into a game it may not have but, it was the first release of a more complex game in a professional package and, by winning game of the year, seems to have opened the door to more complex and longer playing designs by major German game companies.
The game won game of the year but, there was enough call for Amigo to release the Elfengold expansion in 1999 which effectively returned the game to Elfenroads.

All games are alike in that they keep the hierarchy of the pieces and the objective of the game and only adapt the basic conditions to the new medium.
Ferdinand Bork thought he could proof this for the game of skat with many bold number mythological considerations in his Einf€hrung in die Schachgeschichte (Introduction to the history of chess), of which only 70 copies were published (Klanxb€ll 1951).

Gamerdad - Something for the Kids
Advertised as a game for children and families, Eagle Games' Lord of the Rings is a kid's board game that includes strong thematic ties to the books and movies while remaining a simple game with a playing time short enough for the young ones.
The result is a fun game for young and old fans of the story, but remains a decent game for those that are not.
The game pieces are wooden and sturdy cardboard and combine well with the watercolor art that conjures up memories of the Lord of the Rings book cover art of the 70s and 80s.

Catan Online - About the Game
While working with the board game publisher Franckh-Kosmos Verlags-GmbH and Co (Kosmos), it was determined that the scope of the game was too ambitious.
Klaus worked with Kosmos over the course of the next year to refine the development aspects of the game and eventually published it under the German name "Die Siedler von Catan" for the German market in 1995.
Based on the estimates by the various Catan publishers, there are more than 15 million active players of The Settlers of Catan around the world that play the game on a weekly basis, and the audience is continuing to grow at a rapid pace.

1# Insider Info: boardgame inventors, retailers & suppliers
Before we start discussing German games, let us take a look back into game history when we purchased games from the U.S. It started in the early 80ies with the role-playing game D and D (TSR), and was continued with many fantasy games like Wizards and Magic Realm (Avalon Hill).
These games could be divided into two categories according to their themes: fantasy and science fiction games and war games.
One of the best examples is Acquire, a game which also fits most of the given criteria, but the author is American, it was first published by 3M, an American publisher, and it also published a long time before the expression German game was created.

The game itself is focused on two different tribes battling each other to win predominance over the islands of ancient Greece.
Distributed on these islands known at the beginning of the game, each player starts with four cities of which each is manned with one soldier and one ship.
A bit of a weakness may be that some games tend to end rather quick and possibly unspectacular, since players can decide to spend quite a bit of time on discovering new islands, making battles quite unnecessary.

As I found out, Tolkien's publisher had neglected the copyright of Tolkien's books in the USA at that time, and this resulted in a lot of games which actually used topics from the Lord of the Rings.
