Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit - Just for the box, taken off their self-titled debut, and only, album, released in 1972.
Musically, their album is soulful blues/rock, reminiscent of Free, but not quite matching their predecessor in style and musical quality.
After recording their sole album, Kossoff and Kirke returned to the reformed Free in early 1972, and Tetsu and Rabbit followed in July that year.

Kossoff was born in London, England, on September 14, 1950, and early on studied classical guitar (before giving up on the instrument by his teenaged years).
Kossoff and Kirke set out to form another group, hooking up with vocalist Paul Rodgers and bassist Andy Fraser, the quartet decided to go by the name Free (which was supposedly christened by British blues icon Alexis Korner).
Undeterred, Kossoff continued on his destructive path and on March 19, 1976, Kossoff died from a drug-induced heart attack while on a plane flight from Los Angeles to New York at the age of 25.

Soon he became aware of that sphere of activity known as the "music business." Rabbit's father was also a musician and his older brother played drums.

Ex-Black Cat Bones Kossoff and Kirke recruited Brown Sugar vocalist Rodgers; teenage prodigy Fraser had been with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers; name Free suggested by Alexis Korner.
Like the Beatles, Free were better than the sum of their parts; 'The chords themselves were very simple indeed,' Rodgers told Chris Campling of The Times '97, 'it was the space we left between them.

KKTR tends to be treated as a tiny footnote in the Free story -- a minor side-project by Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke after the first break-up.
Lamentably, this was the album that Kossoff discovered the virtues of soloing on top of keyboards -- in Free, largely without keyboards, he had to solo and carry the tune at the same time.
The Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit album is much underrated, probably because people see it as a side-project to Free, and consequently of little importance.

 Free and Bad Company
Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke released a respectable Free-style album as a side project before rejoining Fraser and Rodgers for two more albums.
The drug-addicted Kossoff apparently dropped out of the group before the record was finished, and by now Fraser was gone, so they replaced him with Yamaguchi and also added Bundrick (Yamaguchi briefly joined the Faces soon afterwards).
Produced by Keith Olsen; the tunes are mostly co-written by various combinations of Ralphs, Kirke, and Howe, with executive producer and Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones getting some cowrites (apparently he doesn't play on the record; also, there's some small chance it's actually the Mick Jones of the Clash, but I doubt this very much).

But upon discovering the British blues-rock movement of the '60s, Kossoff's interest in guitar perked up once again, especially after catching a John Mayall's Bluesbreakers live show with Eric Clapton.
Both Kirke and Kossoff decided to stay together, forming the short-lived Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit, along with bassist Tetsu Yamauchi and keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick, issuing a lone self-titled release the same year.
The late '90s saw a renewed interest in Kossoff and another career retrospective was issued, 1997's 14-track Blue Blue Soul, as well as five-disc Free box set Songs of Yesterday, and a Free biography entitled Heavy Load - The Story of Free.

A chance meeting between singer Paul Rodgers and guitarist Paul Kossoff prompted the formation of Free; and early in 1970, barely a year after the release of their debut album, Free went straight to No.2 with the unforgettable "All Right Now".
Simon Kirk is a highly underrated drummer, and is up there with the likes of Ian Paice (Deep Purple) and Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden).
There has never been a musical force as potent, yet ultimately so unfulfilled, as theirs, and the tragedy is not just the loss of Kossoff, a fragile, emotional child inside a man's body, but the loss of what Free could have achieved together if they had been able themselves to understand how good they were.

Famed for their perennial "All Right Now," Free helped lay the foundations for the rise of hard rock, stripping the earthy sound of British blues down to its raw, minimalist core to pioneer a brand of proto-metal later popularized by 1970's superstars like Foreigner, Foghat and Bad Company.
Free formed in London in 1968 when guitarist Paul Kossoff, then a member of the blues unit Black Cat Bones, was taken to see vocalist Paul Rodgers' group Brown Sugar by a friend, drummer Tom Mautner.
Soon, the group disbanded again, this time for good: while Rodgers and Kirke went on to found Bad Company, Kossoff formed Back Street Crawler before dying of a drug-induced heart attack on March 19, 1976.

Free's second album was recorded with the band itself in considerable turmoil as principle songwriters Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser demanded strict discipline from their bandmates, and guitarist Paul Kossoff, in particular, equally demanded the spontaneity and freedom that had characterized the group's debut.
It was an awkward period that saw both Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke come close to quitting, an eventuality that only the intervention of label chief Chris Blackwell seems to have prevented.
Guitarist Paul Kossoff was reeling from the death of friend Jimi Hendrix, a new single, "The Stealer" - the follow-up to The Hit - bellyflopped ignominiously and, when the album followed suit, the band itself was not far behind.

The early '70s also saw Bundrick issue his first few solo releases, 1973's Broken Arrows and 1974's Dark Saloon, but session work was his main focus, as he developed a friendship with Who guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend while playing on his 1977 collaboration with Ronnie Lane, Rough Mix.

Among the members of Bad Company, singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke witnessed the collapse of Free, guitarist Mick Ralphs witnessed the collapse of Mick Ralphs in Mott the Hoople and bassist Boz Burrell participated in King Crimson's stagnation.
In the aftermath of their extraordinarily popular debut LP of last year, Bad Company appears determined not to fall into the traps of any of those groups.
(Unless the "angel" in question is a large and faithful doggie.) Happily, Kirke redeems himself with "Weep No More," a shuffle of the first magnitude which comes alive with honky-tonk piano, beefy organ surges and a strong appearance by an omnipresent string section.
