Kostajnica heroically resisted the Ottoman onslaught until 1556; some historical sources claim that it would not have fallen to the enemy even then, had not the defenders been betrayed by captain Pankracije Lusthaller who had received for 2,000 ducats for his treachery.
In 1777 Kostajnica was granted the right to hold annual fairs and the status of a military community, which resulted in the growth of crafts and trade.
All economic infrastructure of Kostajnica was destroyed in the war.

In the course of time, mediaeval, pre-Turkish fortifications gradually disappeared: in Dubica, Vinodol, Blinja, Komogovina, Hrastovica, on the location of both Donji and Gornji Gradac, in Kostajnica on the Djed hill; a church was erected on the remains of the fortifications in Gora.
Until the war in 1991, the Kostajnica fortification on the islet in the Una river, which once belonged to the Zrinski family, was very well preserved.
Glina, Petrinja and Hrvatska Kostajnica had valuable examples of the Krajina-style urban architecture with Catholic and Orthodox churches from the 18th century.

The massacre in Kostajnica is just a culmination of anti-Croat activities since the Dayton peace treaty was signed at the end of 1995.
But there are certain patterns that point out that the Kostajnica massacre and other acts of violence against the Croats in the Bosniak-Croat Federation are only symptoms of much deeper processes that are taking place in the country.

A rally of Croatian refugees was then staged in the town of Kostajnica, where the "zupan" (county superintendent) of Sisak - Djuro Brodarac, tried to justify the violence - something that did not surprise those that are acquainted with the events and his activities in Sisak and the Banija region in the past several years.
The document further states that according to international law the Croats from Janjevo can not be treated as refugees, because they left their homes before the war, and also because "the Serbian state still is still guarding their houses" whilst the Croats plundered Kistanje and burned it to the ground.
According to a western diplomat, the initial Croatian animosity against the return of the Serbs was maybe "spontaneous", but the events in Kostajnica and the surrounding villages clearly indicate that a well organized action has been staged, with the objective to terrorize the small number of remaining Serbs and run them out of Krayina.
