Kostis Palamas was one of the greatest poets Greece has ever produced.
Palamas was brought up by his uncle, Dimitrios Palamas, in Mesolonghi, where he started studying law.
The last few years of Palamas' life were private ones, spent with close friends and family, away from the public limelight.

Kostis Palamas (13.1.1859 - 27.2.1943) was a Greek poet.
Born in Patras, he received his primary and secondary education in Missolonghi.
He has been called the "national" poet of Greece and was closely associated with the struggle to rid Modern Greece of the "purist" language and with political liberalism.

Several years ago, when we celebrated Palamas at the Annual Celebration of Greek Letters at the University of Minnesota, I and my brother Soterios Stavrou attempted a translation of the same poem.
If you wish to take a look at it, you may find it in a volume called Kostis Palamas: A Portrait and An Appreciation.
Yours could very well be a superior translation but I thought you might want to know fo teh existence of this other translation.

I very much enjoyed the book; it is a small tome with a veritable wealth of information about the great Poet, along with selections (and commentaries) of his poetry in English translation.
Aside from having worked on translating some of his poetry, including the Olympic Hymn, I had not been able to find very much about the man Kostis Palamas heretofore, thus I am indebted to Mr.

 Theatre in contemporary Macedonia
The short-lived Thessaloniki State Theater, founded in haste during the Second World War to offset Bulgarian propaganda, survived thanks to a special tax on cinema tickets.
With L. Koukoulas as manager, Y. Vakalos as set designer, K. Mihailidis as director and Manos Katrakis as leading actor, the theater opened with a play called "Trisevyeni" by the well-known poet Kostis Palamas.
Renamed the Popular Theater of Thessaloniki and supported by funds from a charity drive, it finally closed in 1944 with "Rigas Velestinlis" by Vassilis Rotas.
