Later, with the development of navigation along the northern water route Yaroslav the first great Volga port, acquired prominence, and by the end of the twelfth century the city had spread considerable beyond the confines of the log stockade of Yaroslavl's fortress.
Two monasteries were built to strengthen the defence of the city: the Petrovsky Monastery to the north, on the bank of the Volga, and the Spasso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, to the west, on the bank of the Kotorosl.

Ten centuries ago, the place where it stands - the promontory at the confluence of the Kotorosl and the Volga - was wild backwoods known as the "Bear's Den", inhabited by Merya tribes, pagans who worshipped the bear, the hallowed master of the Northern forests.
At the beginning of the 13th century Yaroslavl became a politically independent entity - a capital of the principality and a major cultural centre.

Since the ancient times there were settlements of Finn-Ugor tribes assimilated with the Slavs at the junction of and Kotorosl rivers.
At the times of Tartar invasion (13th-14th centuries) Yaroslavl was burned and destroyed, but in the 15th century it was mostly restored and rebuilt and became an important commercial center again, for a period of time it was the second richest and powerful city in Russia, after Moscow.
The main entrance to the monastery were the Saint gates (Svyatye vorota), that were built in 1516, but were changed since then (decorations and the a small church on top were added in 1621).
