The Native Village of Kotzebue is the Federally-recognized Tribal government representing the Qikiktagrukmiut, the original inhabitants of the area of northwest Alaska surrounding modern day Kotzebue (Qikiktagruk).
The Tribe, a sovereign entity, is commonly called the Kotzebue IRA due to its organization pursuant to the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act and as amended for Alaska in 1936.
Membership of the Kotzebue IRA is estimated at 2500 persons, most of who belong to the original families of Qikiktagruk, although native peoples from other Tribes are members of the Kotzebue IRA.

We didn't think too much of it - it was August 23, too late in the season to have a late sunset or midnight sun that we from the Lower 48 find so eerily fascinating.
But when we were eating dinner and the sun poked through the clouds over Kotzebue Sound to cast a warm, orange glow into the restaurant, it was disappointing to think we may not get to see a sunset over the sea.

The cooperative, Kotzebue Electric Association (KEA), is a leader in developing affordable energy from wind for remote Arctic communities such as Kotzebue, a primarily Inupiat Eskimo community of more than 3,000 people north of the Arctic Circle, on the northwest coast of Alaska.
Kotzebue seems to be succeeding beyond its goals: the Anchorage Daily News noted in its May 31 edition that the concept of wind power “is catching fire across Alaska, especially in remote and disconnected communities,” such Kotzebue and St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea.

Both the Mulchatna and Kotzebue herds appear in good shape and hunting in both areas is very productive.
Kotzebue area hunting is provided by Alaska Dream Quest and I believe Craig is in the area at this time.
And thats usually is a good sign as we have been associated with the Alaska Aviation business for 18 years now.
