From 1991 to 1996, he worked for the news company Shikoku Shimbun, reporting on various fields including politics, police reports and economics.
The novel Battle Royale was completed after Takami left the news company, and was rejected in the final round of the literary competition for which it was intended, owing to its controversial content.

Co-written by KoushunTakami, author of the original novel on which the movie was based, the manga sticks much closer to the plot of the book than the film version does.
Takami takes more time to explore the backgrounds and motivations of the lesser players in his large cast.
KoushunTakami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a desterded island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, the are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing.
KoushunTakami was born in 1969 in Amagasaki near Osaka and grew up in Kagawa Prefecture of Shikoku, where he currently resides.
Battle Royale, completed after Takami left the news company, was rejected in the final round of a literary competition sponsored by a major publisher due to the critical controversy it provoked among jury members.

KoushunTakami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing.
Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan, where it then proceeded to become a runaway bestseller, Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world.
KoushunTakami named the student's home town Shiroiwa which translate to english as "Castle Rock".

what makes this book so great is that takami gets into the heads of junior high school kids, which makes these characters believable.
there are 42 students involved in the game, and takami explores all of the variations in reaction to impending mortality and attempts at victory.

Sure, you can't fit as much information on a comic page as you can a page in a novel, but almost tripling the length really gives Takami the chance to flesh some things out that were only hinted at or briefly mentioned in the book.
Also, in relation to that, Takami spends more time explaining on why the people who force Shuya into fighting act the way they do as well.
Another scene that I think benifits greatly from the new telling is the scene where the two lovers commit suicide to avoid having to fight and to avoid losing each other.
The first novel by small-town journalist KoushunTakami, it went on to become an even more notorious film by 70-year-old gangster director Kinji Fukusaku.
Unfortunately, KoushunTakami blows these opportunities fairly consistently.
It doesn't help that the book often reads as if it were written by a junior-high student, though it's not clear how much responsibility for this lies with Takami and how much with his translator.

Periodic Diversions: Book Review: Battle Royale(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Having said that, I highly recommend KoushunTakami’s highly controversial first novel, Battle Royale.
Take away the poor writing, lack of originality and the pervading gore-factor and you are left with William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies.
The translation is a little off, but the story is the same and the emotions that Takami tries to bring out are still the same.

Book Summary : Battle Royale (Battle Royale) by KoushunTakami
Customer Book Summary: Having just read "Battle Royale" last week, I can assure you that it is not the deep, thought-provoking classic novel that some Amazon reviewers have made it out to be.
Its comedy (intentional or otherwise), violence, simplistic (but oddly charming) attempts at social commentary, and overall ridiculousness and implausibility make it a must if you're looking for a fun read.
