Construction of the MTR was prompted by a government-commissioned study released in 1967.
MTR Corporation has always been reliant on developing properties next to railway stations for its profits (although the rail lines are profitable themselves); many recently built stations are incorporated into large housing estates or shopping complexes.
The MTR system in general is disabled-friendly — the trains have dedicated wheelchair space, the stations have special floor tiles to guide the blind safely on the platforms, and there are extra wide entry/exit gates for wheelchairs to pass through.

Before rebranding "Kowloon-Canton Railway" refers to the rail-link between Kowloon and Canton (now Guangzhou), or specifically the "British Section" of the railway, which largely correspond to the present-day KCR East Rail.
In 1975, the southern terminus was moved to the new Kowloon Station (now Hung Hom) as the old Kowloon Station was too small and there was no room to expand.
Unlike MTR, there is no student concessionary fare for students for KCR, but students living in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai could apply a personalised Octopus card for Light Rail fare discount.

Kowloon Tong (九龍塘; pinyin : jiu3 long2 tang2) is an area in Hong Kong 's Kowloon peninsula, part of Kowloon City district.
In Kowloon Tong, there is Beacon Hill (畢架山) - 457 m high, Festival Walk (又 一 城) - a shopping center, and Waterloo Road goes from here to Yau Ma Tei.
