A survivor of the Kowno ghetto and concentration camp in Lithuania and of the camp in Dachau, Gotz told The CJN he remembers when George Kadish took the pictures, which could have cost Kadish his life.
Kadish, who lived in Kowno, worked for the German authorities in an X-ray lab outside the ghetto, where he had access to film and the equipment to develop his pictures.
Born and raised in Kowno, Gotz was 13 in 1941 when he entered the ghetto.

In 1941, he was appointed the Generalkommissar of Lithuania, where he took increasingly harsh measures against the Jewish population.
On August 26, 1941, he ordered that all telephones and lines were to be stripped, postal service be cut off, and bridges to the Kowno ghetto be surrounded with barbed wire fences to prevent people from jumping off.
This order also forbid the Jews of the Kowno ghetto to use doors, window frames, or houses for fuel.

I am not sure what Georgenburg is, but it could have been a neigh- borhood (the Jewish quarter?) of Kowno, or possibly a shtetl near Kowno.

As many Lithuanian places Kaunas has a Lithuanian form of the name (Kaunas), a Russian (KOBHa), a German (Kowno or Kauen), and a Polish (Kowno).
In German the city was called Kowna or Kauen, in Polish Kowno.
