dOc DVD Review: Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance (1983)
In my opinion, this makes Koyaanisqatsi possibly one of the most immersive films in history, in a very literal sense, because the audience's thoughts, opinions, and views of the world they live in are as much a part of the experience as anything brought to the banquet by the filmmakers.
Entitled Koyaanisqatsi in order to, as Reggio puts it, leave it without any linguistic baggage, the project was long in a state of uncertainty until funding and distribution finally allowed it to see the light of day.
Koyaanisqatsi is the first in the 'Qatsi' trilogy, followed by Powaqqatsi, an examination of technological development in the third world, and in October 2002, Naqoyqatsi, an examination of how conflict and war define so much of our culture.

Aside from a few deliberately steered surround events, both the 448kb/s Dolby Digital and MLP mixes could be considered conservative; instruments are spread around to the sides of the room but not in a distracting way, especially as when placed, they remain anchored in their original positions.
In strict terms ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ is a 3/2.1 mix, but as is so often the case, the centre channel is hardly used, other than to provide a moderate ‘fill’ between the front left and right channels.

Koyaanisqatsi was directed by Godfrey Reggio, a deeply religious man whose previous filmmaking experience had been in the world of “public education” films about the dangers of technology and the loss of individual privacy.

The potential of the Other: the image of the cave paintings is superceded by a holocaust of rocket exhaust, a painful, muscular lurching toward the stars.
The title of the film, Koyaanisqatsi, is derived from Hopi and means roughly "crazy life," or "life out of balance." Godfrey Reggio, with the help of master cinematographer Ron Fricke, captures the essence of balance, an almost Taoist mingling of opposites, through the juxtaposition of images, environments, themes, and speeds.
Even Godfrey Reggio admits that the film can be interpreted in many ways, as each viewer proceeds on his or her own journey toward understanding our relationship to the world.

Koyaanisqatsi begins with an image of an ancient rock wall painting, and moves from there to untouched nature — showing spectacular scenery from the air and the ground, first peacefully slowly, and then with an increasing pace and sense of urgency.
Koyaanisqatsi doesn’t come across as a blatant environmental ‘message’ film because the presentation is so awesome to look at, but its message is clear — we’re making a mess of what was once — and in some places still is — an amazingly beautiful planet.
