 Kraftwerk
Very few groups can claim to be more seminal than Kraftwerk, which was formed in the early 1970s but continued to have an enormous impact in the late 1990s.
The list of artists Kraftwerk influenced is amazingly long, but suffice to say that everyone from Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Zapp/Roger Troutman, The Egyptian Lover, Whodini and The System to Throbbing Gristle, Bauhaus, The Human League, Depeche Mode, The Shaman, Skinny Puppy and New Order was directly or indirectly influenced by Kraftwerk.
All of Kraftwerk's seminal 1970s albums fall under the heading of "essential." Trans-Europe Express (1977) and The Man Machine (1978) are gems, as are such groundbreaking efforts as Kraftwerk 2 (1972), Autobahn (1974) and Radioactivity (1975).

Ground and Sky review - Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk 2
Kraftwerk's second album (the pylon is now green instead of red) continues the duo's explorations of minimalistic keyboard riffing and the D.I.Y. experimentalist ethic of the first album.
Reminds me of a lo-fi predecessor to pieces like Cluster's "Grosses Wasser." "Atem" ("Breath") and "Harmonika" take the objects in their respective titles and process them, the emphasis being on highlighting a new-found aural texture that arises.
I generally find Kraftwerk 2 to be an improvement over the eponymous debut in that it offers a bit more variety, though ultimately it's still nothing of which your collection will not survive the absence.

It appears to be licensed from EMI records, though it surely has no official clearance from Kraftwerk themselves - the quality of the packaging design and sleeve notes is shoddy at best and inaccurate while the track listing is also wrong.
'Kling Klang' bears only its title in common with that track from the 'Kraftwerk 2' album - this performance is in fact a unique piece of music that Kraftwerk featured in their 1974-1975 live set.
As a historical snapshot of Kraftwerk circa 1975 this CD is invaluable; even at this late point (remember, this is post-'Autobahn') the Kraftwerk live instrumentation is predominantly some synths, electric piano, organ, vibes, flute and electronic percussion.

Kraftwerk's first couple of albums as a duo (Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, and Ralf und Florian) are nowadays all but disavowed by the band's founders and still-leaders, Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.
These releases show a very different side than the later releases that have since become the sacred cow currency of alternative popular music criticism.
So, while I can appreciate how different this sounds from the later 'proto-techno gods' era of Kraftwerk, I have to say I must more or less concur with Hütter and Schneider's assessment.

The music speeds up a little first, then eventually slows right down to a dead halt, picking up to a crawl after that for a few minutes before a faster and different sounding section of the piece, with some guitar effects, cuts in to take the track to its conclusion.
Side 2 is rather more patience-trying, though, especially for listeners favouring the seamless sheen of later-70s Kraftwerk in their musical and conceptual prime.
To sum up, then; if the late 70s Kraftwerk robots were slick-haired androids, developed to a perfect sheen, here they're primitive, bolted-together robots, inhabiting some Phillip K. Dick-esque metropolis and sparking with electricity, and...erm...run out of metaphors, sorry.
