  Kranji, the war cemetery and memorial in Singapore
Kranji War Cemetery is 22 kilometres north of the city of Singapore, on the north side of Singapore Island overlooking the Straits of Johore.
After the fall of the island, the Japanese established a prisoner of war camp at Kranji and eventually a hospital was organised nearby at Woodlands.
Before the war, an emergency water tank had been dug in the grounds of the hospital and this was used as a grave for more than 400 civilians and Commonwealth servicemen.

The War Cemetery lies within the enclosure of the civil cemetery, 2 kilometres south of the town centre on the road to Gabes.
In the cemetery the great majority of the burials are of Canadians who died during the last stages of the war in Holland and during the advance of the Canadian 2nd Corps into northern Germany and across the Ems in April and the first days of May 1945.

Mory-Abbey Military Cemetery is 450 metres north of the village on the north side of the road to Ecoust-St Mein opposite a large farm called "L'Abbaye".
After the Second World War it was decided that the naval memorials should be extended to provide space for commemorating the naval dead without graves of that war, but since the three sites were dissimilar, a different architectural treatment was required for each.
The remaining plots were made after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields immediately surrounding the cemetery, the majority of them of soldiers who died in the Autumn of 1916 during the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme, but a few represent the fighting in August 1918.

I have all of his war record papers from the army, but it provides no information as to what happened to him between his capture and being posted missing at sea.
Visiting Information:Kranji War Cemetery, in which the Memorial is located, is constructed on a hill with the means of access being via three flights of steps rising over four metres from the road level, which makes wheelchair access to this site impossible.
Historical Information:Before 1939 the Kranji area was a military camp and at the time of the Japanese invasion of Malaya, it was the site of a large ammunition magazine.
