Beckett - Music: Gyula Csapo's "Krapp's Last Tape -- after Samuel Beckett"
This sensation further isolates Krapp's violin, adding an increased level of human fragility that might not be evident in performance, as if he is playing to a hollow machine rather than a human audience.
Its title (recalling Samuel Beckett's one-act play, Krapp's Last Tape) is a point of reference which indicates the borrowing of a Beckettian scene (including an actor and a tape recorder used to replay/record the voice of his former/present self).
The live sound of the violin, always muted (except in Krapp's last "waltz" -- 23'30''-24'): the sound is incapable of competing in loudness with that of the machine or with the fact that the tape recorder can produce a montage of time of any density.

What is different here is that Krapp is less of a pawn, or fragment of an idea than the other characters, we are given access to his past, to his fundamental ambivalences (the desire for solitude and companionship), his apprehension of beauty.
The play is also a comment on the nature of theatre going itself: in listening to his old tapes, Krapp becomes, as well as an actor, an audience, and in interpreting what he hears, a critic.

Like Beckett, like Krapp, Hurt is no stranger to booze and disappointment, and the red-rimmed eyes that stare blankly out over the audience, as the 69-year-old Krapp listens to a recording of himself made 30 years earlier, suggest a world of pain and loss.

Bailey impressively communicates Krapp's rage, torment and sadness as he listens to a tape, recorded 30 years earlier, describing a moment on a boat with a girl "in a shabby green coat" when he could have made a decision that would have changed his life.

Krapp's Last Tape Summary & Essays - Samuel Beckett
Like the speaker of Dylan’s song, the protagonist of Krapp’s Last Tape is also certain that he possesses the talent to change the world with his art but the focus of Beckett’s play is how Krapp’s certainty is worn down to a terrible moment of doubt and despair.
Krapp ultimately realizes that nothing will ever be different and that his masterpiece has had no effect whatsoever in the world.
The fact that Krapp wasted his life in pursuit of such a grandiose ‘‘vision’’ (as he calls it) marks the play as one of Beckett’s most ironic and chilling works.

CANOE -- JAM! Theatre - Footfalls And Krapps Last Tape Review - A winning combo
Of all the past century's playwrights, Beckett is perhaps the most demanding of his audience, placing his characters in bizarre circumstances and leaving it to the observer to figure out their past, present and, indeed, future.
Last night, Beckett met the home team in a double header and gave a du Maurier World Stage audience a run for their money in an opening night at Harbourfront's Studio Theatre.
In celebration of his 69th birthday, the lonely Krapp sits down to tape record his refelections, just as he apparently has done every year for the past 30, and finds himself reliving yet again the very real pain of lost love, finding that time, in some ways, has deepened that wound and not healed it.
