MOSCOW - For the first time since the war in Chechnya erupted two years ago, the Defense Ministry has published an official list of regular army soldiers who have died in the conflict, at last giving worried parents something solid to check - and to challenge if their missing sons are not mentioned.
Krasnaya Zvezda's list does not include troops who were killed serving with the Interior Ministry forces or with the Border Guards, both of which have played prominent roles in the fighting.
In an article entitled "We Remember Them All By Name," Krasnaya Zvezda sought to honor the dead, while acknowledging implicitly that the war in Chechnya is not popular.

 Russia - The Media
The major newspapers, such as Pravda, Izvestiya, Krasnaya zvezda, and Komsomol'skaya pravda, were the official organs of party or government agencies, and radio and television were state monopolies.
In the late 1980s, these monopolies began to weaken as stories such as the Chernobyl' disaster reached the public in detail, an occurrence that would not have been possible before glasnost.
The third official national newspaper, Krasnaya zvezda, representing the Ministry of Defense, acquired a reputation in the 1990s as strongly pro-Yeltsin.
