The Red Krayola formed in 1966 when frontman (and sole consistent member) Mayo Thompson and a cast of talented oddballs began playing music together solely for their enjoyment.
The band was a pure product of the social and cultural upheaval that was the Sixties, and went on to release a series of obscure but critically well-received records that bore absolutely no resemblance to the regional breakthrough hits and popular AM radio ditties of the times.
Although 'Singles' is an undeniably wonderful compendium for dedicated Krayola fans and a seemingly perfect primer for curious gourmand types, this is fundamentally challenging and profoundly uncommon music that most casual listeners and other non-fans simply won't expend the effort it requires to absorb, understand and appreciate.

Open source record label - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Open source record labels are a reaction against what some musicians see as corporate control of music via means of copyright.
Open source record labels hold that the fight over free, libre, and open content and media is a struggle over the freedoms of expression and speech, with the goal of radically opening up the possibilities of media.
To this end, open source record labels attempt to release music under so-called "copyleft", a license that enables musicians to develop music collaboratively and equitably and then release it into the same licence.

marathonpacks: now with more zeitgeist!: The Red Krayola "Psy Ops"
For those that need a Krayola primer, they were originally "Red Crayola," but duh, had to change that shit, and came up in the same Texas-psych swamp as 13th Floor Elevators (same label too, I think).
They released two records before breaking up; one I've never heard, and the other (God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail WIth It) (buy) holding twenty sub-three minute tracks of sparsely populated folk-rock (psych-jazz) minimalism.
I've been a fan of Red Krayola for more a decade - though they can definately be taxing to listen to at times, the moments of brilliance make it all well worht the effort.

Pere Ubu formed from the ashes of Rocket From The Tombs, a little-known Cleveland avant-garage band led by vocalist David Thomas and guitarist Peter Laughner.
The two, intent on preserving a couple of RFTT songs, convened a handful of fellow rock and roll misfits to record a single.
This is the soundtrack of intelligent men lost in the wretched cultural wasteland of the 70s, aware that their city was rotting around them and in love with its corroded rusting beauty.

The Krayola’s aim of using pop music as a critique of mainstream ideologies has been pervasively influential in the forefront of the counter-cultural movements of any number of successive generations.
A love-letter solo album, politically and linguistically-charged post-punk records and the deadpanned execution on Thompson’s Drag City work all give the sense of an artist that is incredibly calculating and self-aware.
The Red Krayola is touring Japan, France, Italy, Germany, and England and preparing a new EP of cover songs tentatively titled Taking the Hits Away for release in March.

His delight in the story isn't surprising: Its air of intellectual combativeness, and the tension between its cerebral set-up and colloquial punchline, are also features of the records that Thompson, the band's co-founder and sole constant member, has released under the Red Krayola banner over the past 35 years.
The Red Krayola's new double positive, Fingerpainting, may surprise -- and initially frustrate -- fans of the band's guitar-driven, song-centered work on Chicago indie Drag City, which started releasing Thompson's records in 1994, about the time he took a teaching position at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design after two decades in Europe.
But the recordings of the songs are all contemporary versions, handled in a certain way.

Because we were trying different approaches not only from record to record but from track to track, it never struck me as much of an evolution.

Red Krayola offers something new for fans   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Mayo Thompson's Red Krayola has been shattering musical preconceptions since the late `60s when the band, (then known as Red Crayola) recorded a legendary mixture of free-form noise and groundbreaking psychedelia, titled Parable of Arable Land.
A few of the tracks make it sound as though the Red Krayola has sold out and tried to record an album of commercially acceptable pop.
But after a few listens, the band's familiar high level of risk-taking emerges, and it becomes clear that by using pop conventions, the band is subverting them, just as it has subverted traditional notions of album and lyrical structure on all of its previous records.

 Mayo Thompson Interview Part 1
Whether with the noise-psychedelia of the '60s Red Krayola, the scratchier-than-a-flboard guitars of his late '70s English edition of the band, or a current lineup that falls somewhere between those extremes, he's remained resolutely outside of both pop and "counterculture" trends.
We recorded a second album, Coconut Hotel, which the label didn't like at all, which was this abstract music, the most extreme version of the logic that we could conceive of at that time, and also answered to our needs.

Currently in residence in the leafier reaches of Edinburgh's south side, Thompson's latest collaboration isn't as unlikely as it first sounds, even if it was brokered in the very un-rock'n'roll confines of an afternoon barbecue, where the men's wives – both scientists – introduced them.
Abel may be a recent affiliate to the ever-changing Red Krayola, but Thompson's life with – and indeed as – the band began in the mid-1960s alongside two friends, Steve Cunningham and Frederick Barthelme.
Their strategy was extreme from the off, and their two albums, The Parable of Arable Land and God Bless The Red Krayola And All Who Sail With It, marked them out as being well outside the burgeoning peace-and-love generation.

God Bless the Red Krayola is a considerably more subdued but qually eccentric effort, with an emphasis on very brief, acoustic-based numbers; "Ravi Shankar: Parachutist" and "Tina's Gone to Have a Baby" are among its memorable titles.
Recorded by a collective of seven (including guitarists David Grubbs, Jim O'Rourke and Tom Watson, drummer John McEntire and German synthesist Albert Oehlen), The Red Krayola is a potent modern exposition of Thompson's Beefheartian musical inventions and wickedly offbeat lyrics.
Unlike the cagey complexities of The Red Krayola (and despite the admonition to "play extremely loud"), the "The Ballad of Younis and Sofia" and "Luster" — which use only skeletal bits of guitar and organ for accompaniment — are typical.
