Bromberg was the northern of two administrative districts (German: Regierungsbezirk, Polish:Rejencja,) of the Province of Posen (1849-1918) by the Prussian administration and its predecessor the semi-autonomous Grand Duchy of Poznan (1815-1849).
The administrative center was in the city of Bromberg (modern-day Bydgoszcz).
Bromberg district had a larger percentage of German settlers, and was therefore more Protestant, than average for the Province of Posen.

The governor was assigned to give advice in matters of Polish nationality, and had the right to veto the administration decisions, in reality however all administrative power was in the hands of Prussian over-president of the province.
The territory of the duchy was divided into 2 districts: Kreis Posen (Poznan District), Kreis Bromberg (Bydgoszcz District), and 26 counties administered by the landrats and the county councils.
Polish language were gradually removed from the schools and offices due to Germanisation.

After the complete reorganisation of the county and district administrations in Prussia as a consequence of the Vienna Congress (the peace congress after the French Revolution and Napoleon’s war) the “Kreis Czarnikau (Czarnikau County)” was established on January 1st, 1818 as part of the district of “Bromberg (Bydgoszcz)” in the Prussian province of Posen (Poznan).
On October 1st, 1887 the Kreis Czarnikau was disbanded and split into two counties: Czarnikau and Filehne.

The concept of Kreis was different in pre-1806 Prussia and referred to the districts of the noble families ("Die Adeligen Kreise of the Rittergutsbesitzer") as well as the Immediatstädte and royal Domainen-Ämter.
Each Kreis (county) was headed by the Landrat who presided over the Landratsamt.The Landratsamt records are deposited in the state archives.
The Bezirks-Regierung was in charge of passport and emigration matters since 1816, later (1849?) delegated to the Landrat who reported to the district Regierung who in turn gave data to the provincial Oberpräsidium.

On this site I would like to present some results of my, K. Hartfiel’s and J. Nickel’s research in Kreis Schubin, Bromberg and Hohensalza in the form of excerpts from LDS films.
For other researchers in this region the excerpt of the marriage register index of the evangelical parish of Groß Neudorf (Nowa Wies Wielka) as well as the entries of marriages in the civil registry of Kirschgrund (Leszyce) may be of interest.
A listing in tables similar to those presented here would be very helpful.
