While the average summer warmth of Germany is 60° to 62°, the January temperature falls as low as 26° to 28° in West Prussia, Posen and Silesia, and 22° to 26° in East Prussia and upper Silesia.
The largest estates are found in the Prussian provinces of Pomerania, Posen and Saxony, and in East and West Prussia, while in the Prussian Rhine province, in Baden and Wurttemberg small farms are the rule.

A1: Posen (pronounce: POH-zen) was a Prussian province,1815-1919 with the 2 districts of Posen (Poznan) and Bromberg (Bydgoszcz).
(The Kreis of Lipno and the Western portion of Mlawa and Plock areas were part of South Prussia in 1793-1795, Capital was Thorn 1795-1798, Plock 1798-1806) The Kreis was a district of the noble estates headed by the Landrat who was elected by the nobility and who wore a uniform.
In the latter decades before 1900 there was a strong migration from Posen province to the Western Prussian provinces, most notably to Rheinland and Westfalen where the booming industrial Ruhr area and its coal and steel companies were the main attraction to the new labor force.

Posen and Westpreußen (West Prussia) were ceded outright to the newly created state of Poland by Part II Article 27 and Article 28 and Part III Section IX of the Treaty of Versailles.
Eupen and Malmedy "Kreis" (province) was ceded to Belgium by Part III Section I Article 34 of the Treaty of Versailles.
Provision was made, not for a Plebiscite, but that the inhabitants would register their choice of whether or not to remain a part of Germany and that the results of that poll would be communicated to the League of Nations.

Each Kreis (county) was headed by the Landrat who presided over the Landratsamt.The Landratsamt records are deposited in the state archives.
The Bezirks-Regierung was in charge of passport and emigration matters since 1816, later (1849?) delegated to the Landrat who reported to the district Regierung who in turn gave data to the provincial Oberpräsidium.
