Made up of young professionals from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, Kremerata Baltica is a northern equivalent of the central European Mahler Chamber Orchestra, though there are crucial differences between the two bands.
The Kremerata's performances sometimes suggest that it is much more of an orchestral finishing school than the real thing, and crucially it still lacks its own, separate identity, remaining very much an orchestra in Kremer's image.
There is something about the Kremerata's full-blooded playing, though, that suits early Shostakovich, and the two Octet pieces (all that the young composer completed of a projected four-movement work) were thrillingly vivid.

The incomparable Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica magnificently portrayed the morbidity of the piece in the phantasmagoric start of the second section.
The cellist had her finest moment towards the end of the second section, in which she heroically took up the theme, rescuing it from the morbid musing of the viola with a perfect sense of proportion and a dynamism.
The fermatas were perfectly gauged, the tensions were precisely balanced, and the intense psychological drama of the work (that can very easily be ruined with an excessively emotional or dramatically overwrought reading) was quintessentially preserved.

Gidon Kremer's KREMERATA BALTICA project looked like a passing fancy when he founded it in 1997.

Seen in this light, it is evident that KREMERATA BALTICA is not a chamber-music group in the conventional sense.

The young Kremerata Baltica won fans with the adaptations on their Eight Seasons CD, which combines the nuevo tango of Astor Piazzolla with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
On their second recording, master Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer’s evocative technique shapes the ensemble’s spirited grace on a selection of meditative 20th-century works, as they apply traditional stylings to modern motifs.
For Philip Glass’s Company, which was recorded as String Quartet #2 by the Kronos Quartet in 1986, Kremer adapts a more deliberate pace, and the Kremerata’s exacting performance bathes the original in lush textures.

The vigorous and fresh performance of the Kremerata Baltica - newly signed to Nonesuch in an exclusive six-record deal -- gives the Vivaldi work a new vitality without compromising its essence, while introducing audiences to Piazzolla's striking, lesser-known, and eminently worthy 20th century composition.
