My favourite kind of board game (Kremlin, for example) involves loads of table talk, discussion, backstabbing, and general Jedi mind tricks, and so my first real board staring experience, El Grande, left me decidedly cold.
The elements of the game we liked - trading, building, catching the leader - started to lose their gloss and the game began to seem like little more than a dice rolling competition.
