HIV-Aids - Cameroon - a paradise for tourists and Aids
The inhabitants of Kribi, a well-known sea resort on the Gulf of Guinea, were hoping that an oil terminal linking Chad to Cameroon would solve all their problems of unemployment, poverty and isolation.
According to Cameroonian activists, members of the consortium responsible for the extraction and transport of the oil, had sensitised their employees with HIV and Aids education, but neglected to extend it to the local population.
Joseph, a family man who cleans rooms in a small hotel in the city centre, said that girls engaging in sex work were helping their parents, who were struggling to make ends meet "because of inflation caused by the arrival of the Oil Consortium".

Alexander's Gas & Oil Connections - Lots of activity in southern Cameroon
27, 1997 Kribi was a small seaside resort and port in southern Cameroon and used to be considered a backwater, but businesses are now lining up to invest in it.
The interest was evident on Feb. 21 when thousands of people, from entrepreneurs and architects to politicians, drove to the town, which is 325 kms by road from the capital, Yaounde, to see President Paul Biya inaugurate the Ebome offshore oil field.
It is too early to tell whether Kribi will be an exception to the general picture in Cameroon, where oil revenue has bolstered macroeconomic indicators but exacerbated structural problems.

KRIBI, Cameroon - Kribi, on Cameroon's Atlantic coast, was a lazy fishing town with beaches of white sand, but oil is starting to change all that.
For Kribi, this will mean investment in oil services, new construction work, plus new social amenities for workers which will also benefit the local people - hospitals, schools, better roads, water and electricity supply.
Those concerns have not gone away, however, with some Kribi people especially worried about the impact of any oil spill on the fishing industry that has enabled the town to live until now and will continue to do so once the oil has dried up.

:: OPEC Fund for International Development - Press Release ::
The rehabilitation of the National Road 8 linking Yaoundé to Kribi through Olama, is one of the development priorities of the Government of Cameroon, due to its regional strategic importance for transit traffic from the landlocked neighbouring countries of Chad and the Central African Republic to the port of Kribi.
Furthermore, the importance of the road stems from the need to develop the port of Kribi as a deep-sea port to complement the activities of the existing port of Douala, whose present location on the river Wouri constrains its expansion.
Other factors include the development of an industrial zone close to Kribi port and plans for processing and exporting LNG and an export terminal for the crude oil coming from Chad, in addition to meeting the export requirements for bauxite, steel and timber.
