A total of seven bridges are part of KRIFAST, the most famous one being the suspension bridge ''Gjemnessundbrua'' from Bergsøya to Gjemnes, with 108 m (354 ft) high towers and a span between them of 623 m (2,044 ft).
KRIFAST was authorised by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting, in 1985, and construction began in October 1988.
The government pledged to finance 39% of the expenses, the rest were to be taken in as toll on road traffic and car ferry fares (on the ferries to be obsoleted by the tunnel and bridges).

Arve Mjelva fra Fastlandsfinans snakket om Krifast, som er nedbetalt i 2008.

Krifast er fastlandssambandet mellom Kristiansund og Frei, opna for trafikk i 1992.
I desember 1982 vedtok fylkestinget i Møre og Romsdal å prioritere Krifast framfor andre samferdselsprosjekt i fylket.
I 1983 leverte Regjeringa ei stortingsmelding om Krifast, og to år seinere vart prosjektet med finansieringsordning vedteke i Stortinget.

Aksjonskomiteen BOMSTOPP vil med dette åpne brevet til kommunestyrerepresentantene i Gjemnes, Frei, Kristiansund og Tingvoll appellere om å gjøre et positivt vedtak som sier et klart nei til en forlengelse av Krifast.
Vi ønsker at dere som valgte representanter for innbyggerne har respekt for de vedtatte forutsetningene som låg til grunn for vedtakene om et bompengefinansiert Krifast.
Vedtaket om å bygge Krifast var et meget dristig og fremtidsrettet vedtak som har hatt og vil få enda større betydning i årene fremover dersom en fjerner det unaturlige stengslet som bommen representerer i dag.

In the last few years, high strength light concrete has gained a solid foothold in the construction industry, especially bridge construction.
Last year a bridge floating on seven pontoons made of light concrete was opened as part of the so-called "Krifast" project, which links the islands off the coast of central Norway in Møre and Romsdal county to the mountainous mainland outside the city of Kristiansund.
This was the world´s first floating bridge without side anchoring, and another is currently under construction.
