		The Kriol culture is pan-Belizean and as such, September 10th, which was the decisive date after which those in Belize took ownership of this country, should reflect the unifying element and patriotism that the Kriol culture represents.
		Furthermore, the Kriol is one of the founding groups of this country and as such the acknowledgement of this group should play an integral part in our national calendar, just as other founding cultural groups are acknowledged in the Belizean national calendar of events.
		The Kriol, too, have made Belize what it is today, and both the African and English history of Belize that continue to touch all ethnic groups are acknowledged in official recognition of September 10th as National Kriol Culture Day.

		Kriol, also known as Roper-Bamyili Creole, is a relatively new Aboriginal language spoken by an estimated 20,000 or more speakers, according to the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL).
		Varieties of Kriol are spoken across a broad swath of pastoral country in Northern Australia from Queensland to Western Australia, in areas such as the Gulf Country and Lower Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Ngukurr, Barunga (formerly Bamyili) and Katherine in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley Region of Western Australia.
		The orthography for Kriol was devised by John Sandefur, an SIL linguist.

		As is well known, the Casamance dialect he studied is a more conservative variety of Kriol due to the loss of contact with the substrate language as early as 1886.
		What later happened to Kriol syllables, providing structures like those in (4), was the well-known process of complexification that always takes place in the transition from a pidgin to a creole (Hymes 1971: 77, 84) and, especially, in decreolization.
		A well-known fact about today's Kriol is the application of rule (5 b), hence the generation of the syllable structures CVC and VC.

		Societal resistance to vernacular literacy in the Pitjantjatjara/Yankuntjatjara lands is paralleled by a similar resistance to pidgin creole literacy in other parts of central and northern Australia (see Rhydwen 1993) particularly in the case of Kriol where literacy was developed with the aim of emphasising the separateness of this language from English.
		Whilst the official use of written Kriol, and particularly a separate standard orthography, is unlikely to gain much acceptance, a structured approach of informally using the oral form of Kriol in the first years of education is much more likely to be a successful strategy.
		Kriol is widespread and affects all school types - state, catholic and independent - and as students move between schools it could do more harm than good if systems use different approaches.
