Saraswat received his B.E. degree in Electronics in 1968 from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1969 and 1974 respectively from Stanford University, Stanford, CA.
Professor Saraswat's research interests are in new and innovative materials, structures, and process technology of silicon and germanium devices and interconnects for nanoelectronics.
Saraswat is a Fellow of IEEE, member of The Electrochemical Society and The Materials Research Society.

Stanford's Saraswat said leakage and costs are two reasons why almost everyone expects germanium MOSFETs to be built on Ge-on-Si-on-insulator (SOI) type wafers.
Yet, Saraswat of Stanford said no one expects germanium to kick silicon out of its spot at the center of the electronics industry.
Nevertheless, Saraswat said, collaborative research into germanium makes good sense because "silicon is not the best material, from the viewpoint of its textbook properties.
