Britain   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Because of resistance to Roman rule in Armorica (which was supported by Celtic aristocrats in the islands) Julius Caesar responded with two invasions of the main island in 55 and 54 BC.
The kingdoms established on the island of Great Britain were perceived to be dominant over the whole archipelago, which was known as the British Isles.
Great Britain is indisputedly the name of the large island, but is occasionally used to mean the UK, for instance in the modern Olympic Games.

 Literaturschock: Interview mit Kristen Britain
Kristen Britain: I had always thought the notion of a messenger's job as being dangerous was intriguing, which led me to wonder who would do that kind of job, and what sort of adventures they'd get involved in.
Kristen Britain: There will be more stories about the Riders, for as long as the story needs to be told, and for as long as my publisher wants them.
Kristen Britain: I spend time at www.sff.net where a lot of authors have newsgroups, and anyone is certainly welcome to join in.

Britain is attentive to the social forces shaping the cultures in her world and her descriptions of natural settings are more than generic landscapes.
Her combat scenes are sometimes jarring, but in such a way as to convey the shock of such encounters, and as a result they are very effective.
Britain deserves credit for taking a situation with basic similarities to Lackey's work and marking it with her own style.

The SF Site Featured Review: Green Rider
Kristen Britain can be found in Maine paddling a canoe in stillwater, ambling through woods to mountain summits, or sitting along the rocky shore listening, watching, and daydreaming.
The Riders themselves, with their mysterious magic and ancient heritage, are a fascinating creation, and Britain eschews the cliché‚ of the medieval fantasy setting, combining 16th and 18th century elements into a culture with a strong Scottish feel to it.
But Britain's technique noticeably improves over the course of the story, and by the book's end she has settled into a swift, easy style.

First Rider's Call -- book review
I thought that she was a talented writer, albeit one who resorted to too many fantasy cliches, and hoped that her second book (which was supposed to come out a year later) would move away from those.
While this isn't the most original plot around, Britain does try to do some new things with the familiar tropes she is using.
She does suffer from a few cliches (Eletians are basically elves with the pointy-ears filed down, for example), but for the most part she avoids the potential landmines in her path.

I realize that Britain may be setting up something for the next book, but I think she should have also made it mean something in this one as well.
I hope that Britain has since hit her stride and that we will be able to keep the originality in the third book and go back to some of the smooth writing of Green Rider.

First Rider's Call by Kristen Britain
Quite brave then of both Britain and her editor to jump straight into the story - no précis of book one, no 'story so far' set out for newbies (as a bonus, also no map or interminable prologue).
After five years, this may be shooting themselves in the foot a little but the back-story is woven in subtly enough that you garner all the major facts quite swiftly after a few pages.
Britain captures her dialogue especially well, just tart enough to cut through most of the sentiment at key points.

 Book Review: First Rider's Call
Although the book was well written, the characters interesting, and the story well-conceived, there were some problems for me, in that Kerigan spends most of the book reacting, rather than acting.
One of the very interesting things that Britain does is break up the narrative with journal entries from long ago by Hadriax el Fex, who was the right-hand man of a character called "Mornhavon", who is now somehow the source of evil scourging the countryside.
The essence of Mornhavon is supposed to be trapped behind a mystic barrier called the D'Yer Wall.

Romantic SF & Fantasy Novels | Weblog Entry - 08/16/2003: "First Rider's Call by Kristen Britain"
While none of the settings or themes are particularly original (Britain's mining the usual vein of high fantasy tropes), the Green Riders are well drawn and most of her villains actually have a touch of menace to them.
There are, of course, obstacles in the way, and I'm sure that any subsequent book will cover her relationships in more detail.
I think one of the greatest reasons people find these books refreshing is that Britain doesn't end them on a cliffhanger.
