SPLICEDwire | "The King Is Alive" review (2001) Kristian Levring, Romane Bohringer, Bruce Davison, Jennifer Jason ...
Co-written and directed by Kristian Levring as his contribution to the Dogme95 collective -- a quartet of Dutch filmmakers experimenting with cinematic minimalism -- the film's vérité style of handheld cameras and natural light (per the Dogme rules) makes it pop with tension and raw emotion as the tourists unravel.
Levring draws a few parallels to Shakespeare's characters, but the plot of the play (about the disintegration of a kingdom divided by an aging monarch between his rival daughters) is not really germane to the film's narrative.
Levring is more deliberately cinematic with this film than his Dogme brethren have been with theirs (Thomas Vinterberg's "The Celebration," Lars VonTrier's "The Idiots," Soren Kragh-Jacobsen's "Mifune").

If you've heard the name Kristian Levring before, it was probably in connection with the Dogme Manifesto, which he co-founded with Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterburg, and Soren Kragh-Jacobsen.
Even though he's the last of the four out of the gate with a Dogme film, The King Is Alive is one of the best, and the director shows that one can make a movie both visually and dramatically rich under the manifesto's guidelines.
Kristian Levring: I don't know, but it's going to be very dependent on the films that are made.

 Kristian Levring Interview
Levring's contribution to the experiment, "The King Is Alive," opened this weekend in the US, and it is now one of 26 movies officially sanctioned as Dogme95 in the last four years.
Bouts of bitterness quickly arise between couples, base behavior surfaces among those who feel they have nothing to lose, and with the portent of possible death looming as large as the blistering desert sun, individuals turn inward to face their own demons.
Levring himself doesn't seem to have much in the way of inner demons.

A longtime friend and classmate of Von Trier’s, Levring has spent the last 15 years as a commercial director; his only previous theatrical film was released in 1986.
Consequently, Levring was in the unusual position of asking his actors to deliberately play their parts badly, as least as far as Lear was concerned.
That said, Levring is done with Dogma’s faux primitivism, at least for the moment.

"Kristian Levring's The King is Alive operates on a conceptual, pseudo-intellectual level, perhaps a touch too orderly to convey true madness."

Following Lars Von triers and Tomas Vintenberg with Dogme no. 4 is no mean feat, not least when you're directing Shakespeare in a desert in a foreign tongue.
Kristian Levring was a film aficionado before shooting started, now, after getting hot and dirty with DV, he's a new convert.
What's more he attacks the moves to make more film-like DV cameras such as the Sony 24fp as stupid - if you want to make it look like film, then shoot on film.

The same could also be said about Levring’s The King Is Alive, which is about a bunch of tourists trapped in the Kalahari Desert, who spend their time rehearsing Shakespeare’s King Lear while waiting for rescue or death.
The four Dogma members were located in the control room (Kragh-Jacobsen, Vinterberg, Levring in Tivoli, Trier in the Open Film Town), each directing their own main character/actor and film crew by remote control as they made their way around downtown Copenhagen on the last night of the millennium.
Finally, Kristian Levring directed Niels-Henning’s friend Carl (Bjarne Henriksen), who has to send his girlfriend (Helle Dolleris) away as well as calm down a potential suicide victim.

It's a Dogme film, which means it was made under a set of rules that holds the film maker to natural light, ambient sound, actual locations, and possibly a few more restrictions.
The intrusion of a soundtrack is blissfully missing, and the only music in the film leaks from a set of headphones for a disc player, lasts about 5 seconds, and works with great effect.
Levring also made good casting choices, and the cast does a good job except for a few moments that are miserably improvised.
