In the News (Thu 31 Dec 09)

Kristoffer Rygg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born September 9th, 1976 in Telemark, Rygg was 16 years old when he formed Ulver, which was considered one of the most groundbreaking bands of the genre as well as an instigator for related subcategories such as folk metal and avant garde metal.
In addition, Rygg had also been a vocalist for Borknagar (1995-1997) and Arcturus (1993-2003), both which are comprised of many notable musicians from the early Norwegian Black Metal scene.
Rygg possesses a wide range of vocal textures and styles, ranging from falsettos, baritone, and even fl metal style rasps and shrieks, though performed with an extra venomous intensity not found in many other vocalists.

After this, the band was put on ice for a while because of the departure of Marius, and due to the fact that Steinar was no longer interested in playing the guitar and wanted to concentrate on the keyboards.
Arcturus recruited Samoth as their new guitarist in 1993 while the young Kristoffer Rygg (Garm, of Ulver) joined as the new vocalist.
At the same time, it was announced that Kristoffer Rygg had left the band, and was to be replaced by Spiral Architect singer Øyvind Hægeland.

Daniel Cardoso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Partner with Kristoffer Rygg in Head Control System, Daniel was born in the south of Portugal in 1981.
During that same period was invited by the band Re:aktor (signed on Nuclear Blast) to join their flanks, which he did for a while, featuring on their debut record single's video and joining them on their european tour supporting U.S. legends Exodus as a drummer.
He just finished working with Kristoffer Rygg on Murder Nature, Head Control System's debut, to be released worldwide by The End Records (US) and VME (Europe).

Perdition City was just the opposite: gone were most of the members from the recording of Themes… leaving only Kristoffer and Tore Ylwizaker with a number of guests, including the band’s former guitarist, to fill in the holes.
Metal of any kind it certainly was not: this was trip-hop, this was jazzy, this was electronic ambience, this was nothing we had heard before and it was brilliant.
Rygg’s unique voice helps to break up the monotony somewhat but not enough to make it more than just a fair track.

The heavy groove/rock/metal act, Head Control System, comprised of Daniel Cardoso (Sirius, Re:aktor) and Kristoffer Garm Rygg (Ulver, Arcturus, Borknagar) will serve up their infectious debut for The End Records titled Murder Nature on April 4th, 2006 and no doubt it'll shake some foundations.
Daniel Cardoso and Kristoffer Garm Rygg exude a powerful concoction of ideas, energy and uniqueness that can only come from experience.
It sounds heavy, yes, but I was recording it with a rock attitude and vibe." So buckle up, crank up the volume dial and let the music drive you till the cows come home.

In a scene full of chancers, freeloaders, and phonies, Kristoffer Rygg (AKA Garm, Daddy G, Trickster G., Garm Wolf, etc.), is a true artist.
If you're prepared, however, to dig deep within yourself in order to wrestle with some of your most hidden nocturnal anxieties – and enjoy the process to boot – you really need to hear this record.
Not only because this is probably the most meaningful and important record Rygg will ever make, but also because it's been far too long since a record this deep and involving came out of anywhere near what rock music's been offering of late.

 Ulver
Kristoffer Garm Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker, Jørn H. Sværen
Ulver, which originated from Norway, is a band that has changed style so many times, that you cannot say whether they are "metal" nor "folk".
Today the band has changed to a different style of music and barely has anything to do with the scene anymore.

Kristoffer Garm Rygg vocals are terrific as usual, sounding tired and a little dramatic.
Ulver built their track around the main theme of Coil’s Red birds will fly out of the east and destroy Paris in a night.
This track is quite simply stunning, showcasing a real sense of composition (although the quoting of Coil plays an important part).

Firstly, Ulver, fronted by the enigmatic Kristoffer Rygg (or Garm, or Trickster G, depending on which era you’re most familiar with) seems pretty comfortable to keep listeners on their toes.
Later on, through “In the Red”, the music switches to a big band sound akin to something you might have heard in the 1920s, then to a detective flick from the 50s.
There are some more straightforward tunes like “Blinded By Blood,” a dark, yet hauntingly sweet tribute to Rygg’s son Leon and “Your Call,” with its rhythmic telephone ring permeating the structure, begging you to pick up the receiver.

Unclassifiable under any genre, per se, Ulver has grown, in the space of 11 years, from the depths of the cult Norwegian Black Metal scene into a region that is difficult to compare to many of their contemporaries.
Blood Inside is Ulver's third full length release under Jester Records, Rygg's own record company, and their first since 2000's critically praised Perdition City.
Experienced in scoring feature films, Ulver has no trouble setting the atmosphere right off the bat with "Dressed in Black." A near-perfect level of ambience is constantly present, complementing the hooks and melodies that flow and interchange quite well throughout the record.

Ulver, led by Garm (well, his given name is Kristoffer Rygg, who now goes by Trickster G, but he'll always be good 'ol Garm to me), can certainly be described as an act that pays no attention to blind allegiance to scene ethics.
For those who feel that bands like Slayer, Morbid Angel or Mayhem have veered off course too much, as much as they've all changed, it's safe to say that their changes look to be nothing but pure stasis in comparison to the development of Ulver.
So (much like, but not as severe as, Laibach's somewhat restrained remix of Morbid Angel) at the end of the day, you're going to want more out of this release.

ULVER – A Quick Fix Of Melancholy
If there is one thing to expect from ULVER, than that every new output is far away from everything Kristoffer Garm Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker and Jurn H. Sveren have done before.
After their grandiose release Perdition City, followed by the EP Silence Teaches You How To Sing (and its single) ULVER breaks new ground in creating their first soundtrack for the Lyckantropen movie (I warmly recommend to everybody open-minded musically).
A Quick Fix Of Melancholy is a wonderful piece of music, strange, far away from anything else, full of seeming antagonism but falling into places to an harmonic entity.

And while Ulver truly bear a resemblance to no one, it's nice to be able to call up at least one familiar name when attempting to describe these Norwegian's latest sonic chaos.
"Blood Inside" is much more ambient than "Perdition City," the last true studio album by Rygg and the clan.
But at the same time, it is more abrasive than either that or "Themes from William Blake's 'The Marriage of Heaven & Hell'" (a personal favorite, I must admit).

I could never seem to believe I was listening to all there was -- not in the sense of hearing everything that was going on, but rather connecting the dots and finding the implications of each section and element; but enough is enough.
Trickster G. Yet while it may be argued that this is what it sounds like from afar, the music on _Blood Inside_ is actually a progression -- not a straightforward progression; perhaps more of an intertwining and multi-directional (multi-dimensional?) one.
Lack of cohesiveness should not be excused by one's genius or tendency to experiment, and if there is one thing I dislike about this album, it is precisely that.

Although well known in the Death Heads thread, this band remains highly under recognized on these boards, and throughout the world.
The main person involved in this project throughout the years is Kristoffer Rygg, aka Garm, for his involvement in other bands such as Borknagar and Arcturus, as well as donating his vocal talents to other bands, such as Zyklon, as a guest vocalist.
One thing many people say is that it is almost impossible to change musical styles and make it work, with Metallica being the prime example of this complaint (note I am not making a comment on metallica being good or bad or both, this is just an example).

Already introducing Dressed In Black sounds heavy, destructive and gets out of hands with a noisy, drum-dominated chaosium you would expect from a band such as Neurosis.

Blinded By Blood is again pretty quiet, contemplative and with unobtrusive choirs in the background.
