Satellite image of the central part of the Rhine-Meuse delta showing the city of Utrecht and its surroundings, including the Kromme Rijn branch (b), which forks from the Nederrijn-Lek main artery at Wijk bij Duurstede (just outside this image, to the east of the rightmost number 2.
It is along her banks that the Romans built their frontier fortifications known as Limes and it is this waterway that carries the name "Rhine" to the North Sea.
Originally, the city of Utrecht was built by the Romans at a ford near the place where the Kromme Rijn forks into rivers Vecht (north) and Leidse Rijn (west); the last stretch within the city walls, however, was channelised to form the Oude Gracht canal.

 Rhine
The Rhine River (German Rhein, French Rhin, Dutch Rijn) is at 1,320 km (820 miles) one of the longest rivers in Europe.
Though they retained the name, these streams do not carry any water from the Rhine, but are used for draining the surrounding land and polders.
From Wijk bij Duurstede, these are first the Kromme Rijn ("Crooked Rhine") and past Utrecht the Oude Rijn ("Old Rhine") which flows west past Leiden into a sluice complex where its waters can be discharged into the North Sea.

Today, there is only a small stream called Kromme Rijn, that meanders through the city where it splits up in two: the river Vecht goes north towards the old Zuiderzee, the sea near Amsterdam and the Leidsche Rijn flows to the west to reach the North Sea near Leiden.
These three, together with some smaller parallel branches are the network of streams that shapes the urban street pattern.

The Early-Medieval site of Dorestad was situated to the north of the Late-Medieval town of Wijk bij Duurstede, in the province of Utrecht (the Netherlands).
At Wijk bij Duurstede, the northernmost branch of the Rhine (the Lower Rhine) splits into the Lek and the Kromme Rijn (see fig.1).
Due to its situation at this `fork', the settlement was included in the network of Northwest-European shipping routes: the Lower Rhine formed a direct link with the German Rhine area, the Kromme Rijn with (sea)routes to England, the North of France, the Northern Netherlands, North Germany and Scandinavia (fig.2).
