The villains of said Earths, sent to stop Krona from viewing the origins of the universe, failed, allowing Krona to see the hand of the Anti-Monitor rising from the darkness, which shattered the current multiverse.

Whether adding another issue on so that those excellent scenes between the members of the teams as they prepare for battle would have solved the problem is hard to say, and at this point it's academic.

In the real world, DC Comics first came to prominence in the 1940s, when hundreds of new heroes from dozens of comic companies joined Superman (1938) and Batman (1939) in the fight against evil.
After the Second World War, most comic publishers saw less profit in superheroes, and public opinion against the supposed corrupting influences of fictional vigilantes meant an end to most superhero careers.
Ashamed of Krona's folly, the future Guardians agreed to shoulder the responsibility for containing evil in the universe.
