Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 at the time of the discovery of gold on the Rand and is named after President Kruger.
Within the municipal area is the Paardekraal monument erected to commemorate the victory gained by the Boers under Andries Pretorius in 1838 over the Zulu king Dingaan, and on the 16th of December each year, kept as a public holiday, large numbers of Boers assemble at the monument to celebrate the event.
It was at Doornkop, near Krugersdorp, that Dr L. Jameson and his raiders surrendered to Commandant Piet Cronje on the 2nd of January 1896 (see TRANSvAAL: History).

Krugersdorp owes it's origin to two important events in the history of South Africa,namely The Transvaal War of independence (1881) and the discovery of the Witwatersrand Goldfields (1886).
These two occurences with their far-reaching political and economic consequences,were mainly instrumental in causing the establishment of two townships,originally apart,but subsequently united under the name of Krugersdorp.
The Krugersdorp Museum was established in July 1993 and is housed in the Old Magistrate's Court,one of the town's oldest buildings.

Heinrich Grosskopf, who was sought for a long time in connection with the Krugersdorp car bomb in March 1987, had nothing to do with the attack, a former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) cadre told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Pretoria on Thursday.
He said the Krugersdorp blast was planned to cause maximum casualties to the security forces in the area.
He said the intention was to detonate an explosive device in the toilet used by policemen so that it would act as a decoy to attract more policemen from the nearby SA Police headquarters into the area where the car bomb was set.

 IOL: Tigers devour robber at Krugersdorp reserve
An unfortunate armed robber found out about carnivorous crime-fighting at the weekend when he was mauled to death by two tigers at the Rhino and Lion Reserve in Krugersdorp, after he fled the scene of the crime - into their enclosure.
The robber was later found, his meagre booty on his body, in the tigers' enclosure.
Van Rooyen's belongings were found on the man's body, which McLaren described as being in a "pretty bad" condition, and were returned to him.
