Kryha - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
In the history of cryptography, the Kryha machine was a device for encryption and decryption, appearing in the early 1920s and used until the 1950s.
The machine was the invention of Alexander von Kryha, a Ukrainian engineer based in Berlin.
The Kryha machine was patented in the US in 1930; the design shows two concentic discs labelled with the alphabet.

 SVEN SPIEKER-- P R E V I E W - Page 3
An encryptation machine produced by the Kryha office supply company won a prize for its technical innovation (the machine could be used as either an encryptation or a decipherment device, and its electrical version could even write messages at the same time).
The Kryha encryptation machine is a good example of the way in which by the late 1920s industrial standards had become an important marketing tool.
Kryha, which sold many machines to the Prussian police, proudly quotes from an article that appeared in the professional journal Die Polizei in 1928: "In Germany the police agencies have already began to use this new invention on a grand scale and with complete success."

Yevhen Shtendera: Report on the Action on the Town of Hrubeshiv.(Summary)
The officers who accompanied them - Yaroslav Bilyi ("Milko", "Plastun", "Kryha"), second-in-command for the Kholm region, Serhiy Martyniuk ("Hrab"), representative of the Kholm UPA T.V. and a few others - were to inspect the situation at first-hand and establish contacts with AK units.
The Ukrainian delegates were "Kryha", who introduced himself as commander of a UPA unit, Ivan Romanechko ("Volodia", "Morozenko"), chief of the security Bila Pidlaska district and Vasyl Kral ("Chavs", "Bohun"), commanding officer of the UPA "Halaida II" detachment.
"Kryha" replied that he would convey this proposal to his authorities, but said he could give no guarantees since Bila Pidliaska was quite removed from the Ukrainian center of activity.

The Kryha Cryptograph   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Kryha cryptograph had a number of variations.
It had two disks, each with a scrambled alphabet that could be changed by the user.
Although it took W. Friedman only a few hours to solve a message enciphered on one of these machines, the principles required are already beyond those normally dealt with in books on cryptanalysis aimed at amateurs and beginners.

 Hamel biography
He wrote papers on differential equations, and on fluid dynamics, for example on the critical velocity of a fluid, that is the velocity at which the flow changes from laminar to turbulent.
He made other interesting contributions such as his work on the mechanical "ciphering machine" invented by the engineer Alexander von Kryha from Berlin.
In 1927 Hamel computed the size of the key space of the Kryha-Ciphering-Machine, which was quoted extensively by "Internationale Kryha-Maschinen-Gesellschaft" (Hamburg) to infer the unbreakability of the Kryha machines.

The devise was based on an idea by Frank Rowlett and was considered insolvable, and that it was.
In 1924, Alexander von Kryha of Germany invented a simple spring driven arrangement of concentric disks which became widely used for 2 decades thereafter.
When proposed to be used in the US Army, Friedman, Rowlett, Kullback, and Sinkov, solved an untypically long test message of 1,135 letters to demon- strate the weakness of the machines ciphers.
