On Sept. 12 someone with the moniker 'unaesthetic' posted in a group discussion site for bicycle enthusiasts a strange thing he or she had noticed: that the ubiquitous, U-shaped Kryptonite lock could be easily picked with a Bic ballpoint pen.
16: Kryptonite issues a statement saying the locks remained a "deterrent to theft" and promising that a new line would be "tougher." This response is referred to as a "trivial empty" answer and an estimated additional 700,000 daily blog readers are engaged in the issue.
While the estimated number of daily blog readers associated with the Kryptonite case is impressive and obviously effective, a new survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project reports that only 27 percent of Internet users say they read blogs, an increase of 58% from a survey taken in February of 2004.

Update: looks like there are fancier tools available to do this anyway, but at least the $100 price-tag puts it out of the convenient reach of anyone near a dollar-store.

Thanks to B.L. for this link to a good (not great, good) interview with the PR person from Kryptonite about that little PR problem they had (understatement of the year, I know)—Naked Conversations- Kryptonite Argues Its Case.
The interview is just good and not great, because I was expecting (hoping for) a little more (okay a lot) transparency from Kryptonite spokeswoman.
I think now that Kryptonite has come out publicly and said this—the Blogosphere’s favourite case study and whipping boy—other companies should start to take noticed.

The fact that Kryptonite's corporate site isn't high on Google search results and the majority of site are anti-Kryptonite pages months later should serve as a warning to all of us.
Getting blogstormed can be a major PR nightmare, I think having good relationships with bloggers and close monitoring of your brand (and people associated with your brand) is absolutely critical.
