A seminar by Professor Krzysztof Zannssi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Professor Krzysztof Zanussi was born in 1939 in Warsaw.
Krzysztof Zanussi's 1966 diploma film, "The Death of a Provincial," won a number of international awards and set the former physics and philosophy student on his way to arguably becoming Poland's premier film director, after Andrzej Wajda.
Professor Zanussi's concern with the conflict between public and private morality, official corruption and the delicate balance between intellect and intuition are further explored in "A Woman's Decision" (1977), "Camouflage" (1977), and "Spirale/Spiral/Quarterly Balance", 1978).

A young engineer is summoned home to the decaying mansion where the exhortations of his dysfunctional relatives to become their savior force him to choose between family sympathies and self-fulfillment.
A young man whose yearning to climb the Himalayas, which his father had died doing, is thwarted when he is framed for petty corruption on the job while facing the death of his mother: a low-key vignette that becomes a profoundly powerful meditation on the possibility for hope in a predetermined world.
The film is Zanussi's compassionate reflection on the often difficult choice between compromise for survival and a sometimes self-destructive integrity.

Kinoeye | Polish film at the 2001 Karlovy Vary film festival
Zanussi's early work from the late 1960s and 1970s explored the soul-searching of young men, usually scientists, as they tried to grapple with themselves and the world around them and find a place for themselves in life.
Zanussi is a devout Catholic (he has filmed the Pope's official biography and acts as his special cultural advisor), and while you can watch his early films and not know the way Zanussi has answered his own existential quests, Życie jako śmiertelna choroba is distinctly a piece of Catholic proselytising.
Ironically, Zanussi's film was, perhaps, one of those that had the least connections with the film-making ethos of the classic era of Polish film-making under Communism in that it veers more towards finding answers rather than asking questions.

Kinoeye | Polish film: Krzysztof Zanussi's Opowiesci weekendowe
As early as Zanussi's first films, Struktura kryształu (The Structure of Crystals, 1969), Życie rodzinne (Family Life, 1971) and Iluminacja (Illumination, 1973), Zanussi examined the predicaments of the Polish intelligentsia, the compromises required to get by, the deterioration of ethical and personal values pervasive in Communist Poland.
Zanussi (like Kieślowski) situates these moral dilemmas in the domain of ordinary life: all of us, he implies, face similar quandaries.
For a couple of Zanussi's protagonists, such as the heroine of "Damski interes," virtue is its own reward: they simply feel good when they opt for the moral rather than the selfish choice.

In a time when many directors simply adapt the texts of others or dramatise fiction, Zanussi is one of the last, great representatives of the 'authorial cinema' movement, in the manner oflngmar Bergman.
Maestro Zanussi is also active in television, and has produced feature films, documentaries, and television programmes not only in his native Poland, but also in Great Britain, the U.S., Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, and Denmark.
His background is truly that of the Renaissance man. He began his university studies in Physics at the University of Warsaw, and continued his Master's degree in Philosophy at Jagiellonian University in Krakow before enrolling in the Director's programme at the famous Film School at Lodz.
