Krzyż Walecznych (English: Cross of the Valorous) is a Polish military award.
Until May 29, 1923, when the last medal for the 1920 war was awarded, the Krzyż Walecznych was granted to approximately 60 000 soldiers.
The order was published in January 1941, and on September 20 of the same year the President of Poland agreed to award the medal to those who were already awarded with it four times during the Polish-Bolshevik War.

On August 5, 1920, he joined the 211th Uhlan Regiment and fought in the historic Battle of Warsaw and at Rudniki Forest (Puszcza Rudnicka) and took part in the liberation of Wilno.
For gallantry he was twice awarded the Krzyz Walecznych (Cross of Valor).
After the Polish-Soviet War ended in 1921 with the Peace of Riga, Pilecki passed his high-school graduation exams (matura) in Wilno and in 1926 was demobilized in the rank of cavalry ensign.

Conferred in three grades (gold, silver and bronze) to civilians or military for merit to the country or its citizens beyond their normal duty.
The Cross of Merit for Bravery (Krzyz Zaslugi za Dzielnosc) was instituted on March 7, 1928 for members of the Police, Customs Service and Frontier Corps for acts of bravery at the risk of their lives in defense of law, state frontier or human life or property.
On October 19, 1942 the Polish Government in Exile in London instituted the Cross of Merit with Swords (Krzyz Zaslugi z Mieczami), also in three grades, for deeds of bravery and valor not connected with direct fight, as well as for merit rendered in perilous circumstances.

 The Polish Submarine Orzel: Legend of WW II
Before that, on 16 November, while Orzel was in Dundee for refit, Jan Grudzinski was decorated by the famous Polish General Sikorski with the "Krzyz Srebrny Order Virtuti Militari" (Silver Cross Medal, Virtuti Militari).
The four other officers and 16 members of the crew were decorated with the "Krzyz Walecznych".The awards were made by Sikorski and Count Raczinsky,the Polish Ambassador to London,aboard HMS Unicorn, the Naval HQ in Dundee.
When Wilk escaped, her entire crew had been decorated, and Wilk's crew wondered why the whole of Orzel's crew had not been similarly decorated after their successful escape.

In 1995, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland, on behalf of that country’s president, presented Pohoski with the Krzyz Walecznych Medal and the Order Virtuti Militari, equivalent to the British Victoria Cross.
