Hornsby Shire got its name from the town of Hornsby at the eastern end of the Shire, believed to be derived from Convict-turned-Constable Samuel Henry Horne, who earned distinction by capturing bushrangers Dalton and MacNamara on June 22, 1830.
The estimated population of Hornsby Shire as of June 2003 was 155,971 (Australian Bureau of Statistics).
The main roads within the Shire are the F3 Freeway (which is managed federally), running from the Wahroonga northward to the city of Newcastle; the Pacific Highway, running from Wahroonga southward to the CBD; the Pennant Hills Road (part of Cumberland Highway), running from Hornsby westward to Parramatta; and part of the M2 tollway.

The Shire of Ku-ring-gai was initially constituted with six Councillors in March 1906.
A small Shire Council building was built in 1911 on the main road in Gordon, replacing the temporary offices that had been in the grounds of St John’s Church.
In 1928 the Shire was converted into a municipality with four wards each represented by three aldermen.

As I have said, whilst I do not always see eye to eye with all elected to councils, I think such a system would produce a council that is broadly more representative of the Ku-ring-gai community.
I was pleased with the determination that voters will have a chance to elect the mayor of Warringah on the next occasion on which there is an election.
I note that today the Minister for Health announced that the Warringah Civic Centre site is a preferred location for a new northern beaches hospital or a new Manly hospital.

When the council issued rate notices at the end of last year it distributed to every household a pamphlet entitled: "Preparing Your Home Against Severe Storms".
In areas that are prone to floods or bushfires, councils could issue similar pamphlets stating what to do when those emergencies strike.
All too often local government is criticised and not complimented for a positive initiative such as this, which is of help to everyone in the area and which many other local councils could adopt.
