Bhagwathi, a critical land parcel in the heart of Kudremukh National Park was encroached upon 15-20 years ago by eight pastoral families who owned about five hundred heads of cattle that grazed illegally inside the park, posing a threat to wild ungulates.
Wildlife habitats, like Kudremukh National Park, are fragmented by both legal private landholders and illegal occupants of forestlands.
The encroached land has once again been merged into the Kudremukh National Park and is being protected by the forest department.

 Whats New
KIOCL is mining in the core area of the Kudremukh National Park, an area generally characterised by "some dense and well preserved evergreen forests^Eand includes shola vegetation typical of the Western Ghats".
Further, it voiced serious concerns of the Wildlife Division that if mining were to continue in the region, there would be disastrous consequences to wildlife and forests, especially in the Kudremukh National Park and the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary.

Further, the Kudremukh issue also combined important issues with regard to the national park, leasing ecologically sensitive lands to the company and final settlement of tribals.
All these are linked to and revolve around the larger issues of ecology/environment: declaring Kudremukh area as a national park, and issues of tribals and their rights, and ‘Thunga Ulisi’ (‘Save Thunga’).
However, radical discourse came from the Kudremukh Rastriya Udyana Virodhi Okkuta (KRUVO) (Organisation Against Kudremukh National Park).

 KUDREMUKH CONCERNS
A team of experts from the Centre for Ecological Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore made a study of the 'Impact of Iron Ore Mining on the Flora and Fauna of Kudremukh National Park and Environs'.
The application said that the mining was illegal and violative of the court's orders on December 12, 1996 on a writ petition, banning non-forestry activity in forests, and on an interlocutory application dated February 14, 2000, prohibiting the removal of even dead and dying trees and grass from national parks and sanctuaries.
In September 1987, the Government of Karnataka declared its intention to convert the area into a national park under Section 35(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

 Who has been undermined?
Km within the boundary of Kudremukh National Park, a Government of India enterprise is involved in continuous extraction of ore to recover 22.5 million tonnes of concentrate every year.
The tussle was between the company's plan for extended mining for another 20 years and the stand of the environmentalists that the working of the company was detrimental to the eco-fragile region of Kudremukh, which was hence declared a national park.
Kudremukh is a company involved in beneficiation of low-grade iron ore like in the present case from about 38% to 67%.

 IndiaBirds.com - Discussion Forum - Reply
The court also clearly held that the exclusion of the company's land (37 sq kms) while issuing the final notification of the Kudremukh National Park was not in order though the same was being used for mining and comprehensively rejected the company's plea for a 20 year extension and for additional unbroken forest land.
This clearly demonstrates the adverse impact of mining in Kudremukh on sediment discharge in the Bhadra River and the Bhadra basin far beyond the devastation within the Kudremukh National Park.
The small sub-catchment at Kudremukh, comprising the mining area, which is less than 6 % of total Bhadra catchment, is contributing 53 - 67% of the total silt load entering the reservoir.

Kudremukh tribals refuse to move out - Deccan Herald
For the tribal families residing in Kudremukh national park area, the vast forest has been their lifeline and source of existence and they are unwilling to move out even if they are given compensation and rehabilitated elsewhere.

The tribals, who have been living here for decades have been coexisting with nature and there are instances wherein they have prevented forest fires, he said.

 Kudremukh
To protect the forests and the Bhadra river which flows close to the KIOCL mines, the Kudremukh forest has been declared as a national park, not without great resistance of course.
This section reflects not only the damages KIOCL has inflicted upon the Western Ghats spread over DK, Udupi districts but also the impact of the creation of the national park on the tribal inhabitants of the Kudremukh forest.
DK is known for its lush green forests of the Western Ghats and gushing rivers.

One of its most recent projects has been to assess the impact of open-cast iron-ore mining on the sediment load in the Bhadra River in the Kudremukh National Park.
The study was carried out during the monsoon of 2002 and was the first rigorous study done in the wet-season to assess the impacts of mining and associated activities in Kudremukh on the sediment load in the Bhadra river.

The impact of the mining operations on the unique forests in the Kudremukh Park has been an environmental disaster for the flora and fauna in the forests of Karnataka.
This is occurring even when evidence points to the fact that KIOCL is claiming to be profit oriented, when a closer look of its finances reveal its operations are highly uneconomical and the company in a loss.

rediff.com: Money: Kudremukh to shut down as lease runs out
As Kudremukh falls in the rich virgin forests of the Sahydri mountain range, the PSU is at the mercy of the environment ministry as the Wildlife Act of 1972 empowers the assistant or revenue commissioner of the area to either allow or ban any mining activity if the region is notified as a national park.
The saga of Kudremukh (which in the local lingua franca means hills in the shape of a horse face) began in the early seventies.
This is not the first time the 2,400-odd Kudremukh employees have been kept on tenterhooks.

(2000) carried out an intensive study on the status of Lion-tailed Macaque in Sringeri range of Kudremukh National Park.
Because of its relatively high density of large ungulate prey such as gaur and sambar, Kudremukh is probably one of the few areas in the tropical rainforests of Western Ghats where a potentially viable population of wild tigers can be recovered and established.
They also observed that since rainforests are contiguous in fairly long stretches in Kudremukh, the region serves as the best habitat for sustaining a biologically viable population of Lion-tailed Macaques in the wild.

Impending Closure of the Kudremukh Iron Ore Mines
Since the grant of the mining lease to the Company, Kudremukh has been declared a National Park and a decision also taken by the Central and State governments not to renew the mining lease.
The Kudremukh iron ore company too seems to be reconciled to its fate and is reported to be on the look out for an alternative mining site in Karnataka in the Bellary region.
This industry was planned to exploit the huge magnetite iron ore resources, estimated at a billion tonnes, forming a part of the Kudremukh range at an average elevation of 2000 m, overlooking the west coast of India some 50 km away.

 GoodNewsIndia~∞~Kudremukh will ride again
In 1987 the state government declared it a National Park.
And so the Kudremukh Iron Ore Co Ltd [KIOCL] came into being with a lease to mine an area of over 4000 ha right in the middle of a notified forest.
But it chose to pelletise the ore at Mangalore and this called for massive sieving at Kudremukh, which left a monumental tonnage of slurry --called tailings-- in the forests.
