Topic: Kufr

In the News (Mon 4 Jun 12)

Religion of the Jahiliya - Jihadism is Kufr, not Islam
According to him, Kufr is defined by most commentators of the Holy Quran as 'denial of the truth'.
Primarily the term Kufr was used to describe the pre-Islamic Meccans' denial of the truth about the oneness of God and prophethood of the Messenger of God.
Kufr is also used for concealment or withholding of the means of subsistence, which God has created for the good of all mankind and which He wants to be freely available to all.

 What Constitutes Kufr?
Kufr should be recognized and acknowledged by the Muslims in general so that they know how to protect themselves from its dangers.
An assignation or specific ruling of kufr (disbelief) for such a person should generally be left to the scholars of Islam.
Kufr (disbelief) is of two types: action ('amaly) and belief ('itiqaady), some of which may be termed "kufr doona kufr" that is, a degree of kufr less than the total kufr which does not necessarily put one outside of Islam although such a person's Islam may be doubtful or in grave danger.

Kufr in pre-Islamic Arabic vocabulary meant "without gratitude." Isutzu has wonderfully shown this in his book on ethical concepts in the Qur'an.
Now in the Qur'an, we are told that those who say God is one of three have committed kufr; this could only be in its lexical pre-Islamic literal meaning.
Kufr has been explained above, but in later Qur'anic and modern terminological usage, refers to one who has, after receiving the clear proofs and message, rejected God.

Kufr Can Occur Without Believing in Kufr or Desiring It
To illustrate with another example, a person who mocks and reviles Allaah or the Messenger, it is not required that the person "desired kufr" by his words of mockery or revilement, and neither is it a condition that he "believed (i'taqada) in what he said" before takfir is made of him.
The latter, "desiring kufr" is of no significance and its presence or absence has no bearing on the ruling of takfir (in those cases where the action is major kufr that expels from the religion)[3].
And the one who is compelled to utter kufr, has indeed spoken with a word of kufr, but he does not become a disbeliever since he did not desire to utter this word, as opposed to the one who mocks or jests (about Allaah, the Messenger, or the religion).

Hence, they made kufr restricted to the rejection (takdheeb) of the heart, and they thought that whoever was declared a disbeliever by the Legislator was declared so because the tasdeeq (assent) of the heart had disappeard from him...

And the reason behind this is that kufr is of two types: kufr in belief and kufr in action, and the kufr in belief is linked to the heart, and the kufr in action is linked to the limbs.
So the one whose actions are kufr due to their contradicting the Sharee'ah, and this kufr follows on from what has become established in his heart i.e.
But not the kufr that ejects one from the religion, as was said by ibn Abbaas and his companions over His saying, "the one who does not rule by what Allaah revealed then they are kaafir." They said: kufr that does not eject one from the religion.

Kufr is a state of being that is definite; but it may be defined only by Allah and His Messenger, Muhammad (on whom be peace and His bounties).
Kufr, in general, refers to a standpoint vis-a-vis Islam: that which is in anyway different from the complete acceptance and compliance with all that was affirmed and made obligatory through the Qur'an and the Prophet of Allah (bounties and peace be upon him).
In the end, it is to be hoped that it is now plain that failure to denounce kufr constitutes kufr, and that the accommodation of kufr dangerously exposes the community to enemy attacks from within by a malignant fifth column.

Similarly, we deal with everyone who manifests Kufr, Shirk, allegiance towards the Mushrikun, and assistance to them against the people of Tawhid with what is apparent until they believe in Allah alone and single Him out in their worship and remove themselves from what they are upon of Kufr and declare their disavowal from it.

Although the victory of Kufr against Islam never materialised, neither intellectually nor spiritually, the shame and humiliation which befell the Muslims was beyond imagination.
Thus, the era of the crusades, is considered an era of defeat for the Muslims, for despite their victory in the end against the crusaders with their expulsion from Al-Sham, they did not pursue the conquests and the wars with the disbelievers.

In the past, I took kufr to only mean "disbelief," a meaning which, I suspect, many Muslims today still take to be the only one.
The root meaning of the word kufr is to "cover up," and thus the kafir is one who "covers or conceals something." I read somewhere that the word kafir has been used to denote farmers, who cover up their seeds with dirt.
That is why they coin the word Kufr (kafir) on anybody who their mind thinks is a nonmuslim.

Book: Truth Prevails - Question of Kufr and Iman (Chapter 3, Section 10)
As the Promised Messiah was not a mere Mojaddid but he has been called by Allah a Nabi, and Rasul, therefore he has himself indicated plainly, for instance in Khutba Ilhamia, that the person to whom he conveys his message, he should yield faith, and not become a kafir, not become a disbeliever.
Where a man accepts the Holy Prophet, holds the Quran to be the Word of God, but rejects the Promised Messiah, his kufr would not be of the kind which turns a man into a non-Muslim.
There is really no room for doubt that in the eyes of the Lord, where the case has been fully and duly put before, a kafir of the first or the second kind, on the Day of the Qiyama, he will be held culpable.

What is meant here by kufr or disbelief is the kind of kufr which puts a person beyond the pale of Islam, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made prayer the dividing line between the believers and the disbelievers.
It is known that the community of kufr is not the same as the community of Islam, so whoever does not fulfil this covenant must be one of the kaafireen (disbelievers).
There are other texts which indicate that the kufr of the one who neglects the prayer is the kind of kufr which puts a person beyond the pale of Islam, so what is meant here by kufr should be interpreted according to the apparent meaning, so as avoid contradictions between the texts.

There are some that say that taqleed is disbelief (kufr) without exception and sinfulness (fisq) and association (shirk), and attribute disbelief (kufr) and misguidance to the four imaams.
Not all taqleed is kufr without exception or fisq or shirk, rather the truth is that its ruling requires explanation, which can be found out from the answer to the second question from what has preceded.
There is not anyone from the scholars of the two sanctuaries, Makkah or al-Madeenah, nor from the rest of the scholars of the Saudi Kingdom who criticize the imaams of fiqh, Maalik, Aboo Haneefah, ash-Shaafi’ee, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, and those of their likes from the scholars of Islaamic fiqh, or who thinks little of them.

Kufr and Shirk, MG Vol. 1 No. 12
‘Kufr’ means ‘to deny’ and ‘Shirk’ means ‘to associate.’ But in Islamic Shari'ah these two terms have special meanings.
‘Kufr’ means denial of the existence of God, and ‘Shirk’ means to associate partners with the All Powerful Allah.
So Kufr means falsehood, and falsehood is such an evil that can never be appreciated by any sensible person.

This concept is then extrapolated to infer that non-muslims also have an equally good chance of gaining Allah's Pleasure in life to come.
It is safe to say that the Islamic scholars of that age, living chronologically closer to the Prophet's time and living in a less complicated world would also have come to this conclusion in their understanding of Islam.
I ask because this definition of Kufr will probably not be accepted by the majority of Muslims today.
