This area is near the Kufra Oasis in southeast Libya, centered at 23.3 degrees north latitude, 22.9 degrees east longitude.
Prior to the SIR-C mission, the west branch of this paleodrainage system, known as the Wadi Kufra (the dark channel along the left side of the image), was recognized and much of its course outlined.
The broader east branch of Wadi Kufra, running from the upper center to the right edge of the image, was, however, unknown until the SIR-C imaging radar instrument was able to delineate its dimensions: at least 5 kilometers wide and nearly 100 kilometers long (3 miles by 62 miles).

After the capture of Kufra by Leclerc in February 1941 it became apparent, that the French have neither the manpower nor the logistical capability to maintain a garrison, and the task fell on the Sudan Defence Force.
Kufra is 650 miles North-west of Wadi Halfa, and while it offers almost every variety of desert surface and desert landscape there is nothing green over the whole route, except the miniature oasis of Selima, lying almost hidden in a crack in the earth's surface about 200 miles from Halfa.
Lorries, personnel and loads for Kufra, all had to be ferried across on barges, and when the river was flowing fast in flood a small tug might pull manfully for two hours before it reached the landing place.

In the south east, the Kufra basin covers an area of 350,000 square km.
However, the quality of the water located in the Murzuk basin is very good, the percentage of soluble salts being approximately 300 parts per million, and in the Kufra basin it is excellent, the percentage of soluble salts being approximately 250 parts per million.

They call themselves a tribe (qabila) and are referred to as one in official documents and private conversation; and they speak of lineages (qabila, aila, haush) even though I think Professor Peters would argue they are not entitled to do so: their sections and lineages do not meet all the criteria he thinks necessary.
Collecting it was a useful way of beginning fieldwork: it provided a relatively harmless topic of conversation which required a relatively limited vocabulary; it was a way of meeting a large number of people, and of making an initial survey of the Zuwaya.
It is relatively easy to maintain a sense of the uncertainty and variability of the genealogy when working by mind; less easy to do so when unambiguous and unhesitating data is put into a computer, and such clear and detailed statistics and diagrams come out of it.

Morris says the raiders left Kufra on Sept. 5th, however, to travel the 800 miles to Tobruk - which seems much more likely and is in any case borne out by Lloyd-Owen's report (40), which says they left at 1706 hrs precisely on that day.

On the way a few Italian roadblocks and mine fields had to be cleared, and the troops was experiencing constant air raids.
