Kuiseb River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kuiseb River in Namibia is bordered on one side by the tallest sand dunes in the world, and on the other by barren rock.
The prevailing winds blow the dunes northward, but their movement is blocked by the river.
In the process, so much sand and silt is deposited in the Kuiseb that it only reaches the sea while it is in flood.

Kuiseb chosen for river basin plan
The Kuiseb project is known as Environmental Learning and Action in the Kuiseb (ELAK) and was established in 2001 with funding from the European Union.
The users of the Kuiseb's resources are from Walvis Bay, the Topnaar community, the Namib Naukluft Park and the commercial farmers along the upper river in the Khomas Hochland.
She said although the Kuiseb was one of the mostly studied rivers in the country, there was not much information on the upper catchment area.

Kuiseb Canyon : the Kuiseb River flows west from the highveld, down the escarpment to the Namib gravel plains to the mouth, which is on the southern edge of Walvis Bay.
The Kuiseb River is also the border between the dune desert and the flat gravel plains of the Namib.
The dunes south of the river generally shift north, but every few years when the Kuiseb comes down in flood, the dune sand is washed into the sea so south of the river is dune desert whereas north, the gravel plains.

Although the dunes encroach into the course of the ephemeral River Kuiseb between floods, the irregular floods are still capable of preventing the dunes from advancing further north.
For example, a common phenomenon in dryland rivers is the occurrence of rapid and deep incision, producing what in the western USA are referred to as arroyos.
For example, the Nile River is sourced from three principle headwaters: the White Nile drains large lakes in the southern headwaters of Uganda, and is clearly sourced from a tropical humid region; the Blue Nile and the Atbara, its other two sources, drain northern and central parts of Ethiopia, a dryland region.

The ox-wagon route to the Orange River contained difficult sandy stretches and rugged mountainous terrain, and water was scarce, but it must have been well-known to some of the local inhabitants, because three grants to graziers of loan-places on the south bank of the Orange had actually been made as early as 1776-77 [5].
At the western section of the Orange River, during its course through the Namib Desert, two crossings existed: Daberas Drift in the west and the somewhat eastward situated Sendlings Drift, approximately on the same longitude as the modern-day Rosh Pinah.
Adequate ox-wagon roads were in existence as far north as the Ugab River and as far as to Outjo with a track leading to the central parts of Owamboland, to the Waterberg and the area around Grootfontein.

In the arid Southwest, such desert rivers are among the richest biological communities, crucial to diversity.
