On the 21st, Kujira was tracking northwestward at 7 mph towards Taiwan/Taipei and weakening and was downgraded to a tropical storm.
Long-lived Kujira was thirteen advisories short of the longest-lived Western Pacific tropical cyclone on record, Typhoon Rita of 1972, and three shy of Typhoon Opal (1967).
Kujira was the first named April tropical cyclone of the past 25 years to affect Taiwan and was Japan's earliest tropical cyclone landfall on record.

This remarkable mosaic, obtained using the TRMM Microwave Imager, shows the evolution of Super Typhoon Kujira's eye in the Western Pacific, during April 14-16.
This storm, located over open water well to the north of Papua New Guinea, was steadily intensifying during the period of TRMM observations, to a maximum sustained wind of 130 kts classifying the tropical cyclone as a Typhoon-4.
Initially on the 14th, Kujira's eye is quite symmetric and very circular.

Although it is difficult to discover in what era people began to use the word 'kujira' (whale in Japanese), it is clear that this word was already in use before the Nara period.
The term 'kujira' can be seen in the "Kojiki" (Record of Ancient Chronicles), the oldest literature in Japan, edited in 712 A.D. and "Nihonshoki" (Chronicles of Japan), the oldest authentic records in Japan, edited in 720 A.D. Different Chinese characters of the word 'kujira' appear in these records.
Although the pronunciations of these words are the same as the current term, neither character is in use today.
