About 400 years ago, the Imperial Family gave the Hongwanji permission to use the Imperial Crest (16-petal chrysanthemum); this crest was used until the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), when the chrysanthemum crest became the exclusive use of the Imperial Family --- everyone else was forbidden to use this crest.
The permission was granted by the Kujo family (a branch of the Fujiwara clan) for the Hongwanji to use the sagare-fuji as its crest.
Takeko Kujo (Lady Takeko Kujo) is the famous person who dedicated her life to the Hongwanji, founded the Fujin-kai, aided the poor, and built the Asoka Hospital in Tokyo, among other accomplishments.

The Kujō family (九条家 Kujō-ke) was a Japanese noble family and a branch of the Fujiwara clan derived from Fujiwara no Tadamichi.
They were counted as one of the Sekke, the five regent houses and therefore one of the most politically powerful families among the kuge (court officials).
With the exception of Tokugawa Masako, wife of the Emperor Mizunoo, all Empresses of that long period were of the clans that formed the Sekke or from branches if imperial family itself.
