  Bojutsu: The Staff and Stick Arts of Hontai Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu
According to traditional lore of the Hontai Yoshin Ryu, the bojutsu style it incorporates was originally characteristic of the Kukishin ryu bojutsu.
For the Hontai Yoshin Ryu this was the third soke, Takagi Gennoshin Hideshige, and for the Kukishin Ryu this was the fourth soke, Ohkuni Kihei Shigenobu.
As with other components of the Hontai Yoshin Ryu, there are various levels of proficiency and competence in the use of staff and stick that help in one's understanding of the techniques and in their application from form or kata to actual encounters.

Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu is a different ryu from the Kuki art found in the Bujinkan.
Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu is headed by Tanemura-san, Kukishinden Ryu Happo Bikenjutsu is headed by Hatsumi Sensei.
It wasn't until after the challenge between Tachibana Kiyosada (Kurama Ryu and a vassal to the Sakakibara family) and Hosoya Shinpachiro (Kukishin Ryu and a Shihanke) that Kukishin Ryu was forbidden (Hosoya killed Tachibana).

 Kukishinden Ryu
Soke of the Chosui Ryu Ohkuni Kihei Kiyosumi (a son of either Ohkuni Onifujita or Ohkuni Onigenta guards of Go-Daigo) renamed it Kishin (kijin) Chosui Ryu.
The Kukishinden Ryu dakentaijutsu is a form of Yoroi Kumi Uchi a grappling in armor, and the Takagi Yoshin Ryu a form of jujutsu that is used indoors.
As the Kukishin Ryu was from the coastal area of Kumano, and members were involved in activities relating to the sea, it was a weapon that was permanently at hand, for the skilled warrior.

 The Nine Schools
This ryu is a battlefield style whose specialty is the use of many different weapons including spears, swords, hanbos, etc. Many of the weapon techniques (hanbo, bo, yari, naginata, etc) in Bujinkan come from this school.
The third of the ninja ryus, it uses similar taijutsu as Togakure Ryu, and is also known for double blocks and strikes This ryu originated with Heinaizaemon Ienaga Iga in the mid 1500.
Not much is known of this ryu except that it is an Iga ninja school and concentrated more on the espionage side of ninjutsu, rather than the fighting side.

 Gikan Ryu
Ishitani Matsutaro, already the Soke of Takagi Yoshin Ryu and Kukishin Ryu, was later repaid for his kindness by being taught the Gikan Ryu, becoming the 11th generation Soke.
He learnt Gikan Ryu from Ishitani as well as Kukishinden-ryu and Hontai Takagi Yoshin-ryu) (not to be confused with Takagi Yoshin Ryu, which he learnt from Mizuta Tadefuza), for approximately two years between 1903-1905 until the death of Ishitani.

 Hontai Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu History
Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu has three parts which are Hanbojutsu (including Sensudori/Tessenjutsu), Jojutsu and Bojutsu (Rokushaku-Bojutsu).
The top fighter of the Oda side and the Kukishin Ryu expert Inaba Kaja Yoshitame (another story is Kuriyama Ukon) who fought using red oak Rokushaku-Bo of an octagon shape while horseriding.
Hontai Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu was a tradition from Ohkuni Onihei through the Yakushimaru and Ohkuni families.

His father, Sadatsune Tanemura, was the 17th family head of a Samurai line, whose roots extend to those of the Emperors Uda and Seiwa as well as having blood ties to the famous daimyo of the Sasaki and Takeda families.
His training was so concentrated, that he received his menkyo kaiden (full mastership) in Shinden Fudo ryu and Kukishin ryu at the age of twenty.
Takamatsu chose Sato Sensei to carry on the Gikan ryu and awarded him the title and scrolls as the new grandmaster of the art in 1963.

Yasushimaru was the recorded founder of the Kukishin ryu if we believe recorded dates Izumo abnd Yasushimaru lived 200 years apart, therefore izumo could never be associated with something was created 200 years after his death.
This school is only a sword school, not taijutsu etc. Hatsumi has brought all of his other Kukishin Ryu studies into the Bujinkan and dumped them along side the Kukishinden, I suppose ina way creating a new school.
The only real connection between the Kukishin and Kukishinden is with Ohkuni Onihei as he was a menkyo kaiden in the kukishin Ryu and a soke of Kukishinden.

This ryu was originally founded by Uryu Hangan Gikanbo in the mid 1500s and specializes in koppojutsu or bone-breaking techniques.

In addition to the bugei ju-happan, the characteristic of this school are the art of the long stick of the monk-soldiers of Shugendo (1m80), the spear of 1m80, and the short staff of 90cm (which was actually the stick of command of the feudal military chiefs).

It's specialty is "kosshijutsu" which simply means "bone fingers" and implies the use of the fingers and hands to defeat enemies by attacking weak points.
Muto Waza are unarmed against either sword or spear and are the most advanced and difficult techniques of the Ryu.

Can anyone provide reliable info (especially on the kukishin ryu side), I know that the SMR are well represented here.
I was told that the kukishin ryu stresses locking, choking, and throwing with the jo much more than modern jodo, is this a fact?
As I was taught, the Jo of Kukishin Ryu is basically a compination of the strikes from both Sanjaku and Rokushaku Bo.
