The pastoral music of Sweden is a unique tradition with ancient roots, yet was still in common use as an integral part of working life on many pastures in Dalarna in the 1950's and 60's.
Typical of this music is the singing style called kulning, which is without words, and sung in a high register.
Some of them are unique in that they are so long, and contain communication in kulning between two singers.

 Kalevala -- Ruth MacKenzie
She was kulning (a high pitched Swedish song for calling animals).
The voice of the Ingrain choral songs, the voice of the crier, the voice of spells and incantations, the voice for calling the animals, all of them house an intangible quality of otherworldliness, of magic.
I've tried to keep that commitment at the heart of this performance work because I believe it is that ugly beauty which leads to the place of magic.

 Composer [Karin Rehnqvist] / SMIC
An attractive feature of several of Rehnqvist’s works is her use of “kulning“.
This archaic song technique produces a loud, high-pitched tone without vibrato which carries over a great distance and was used by herding girls to call the animals in the mountain grazing pastures.
Examples of kulning can be heard in Puksånger–lockrop (Timpanum Songs – Herding Calls, 1989) which caused a considerable stir at the ISCM World Music Days in Stockholm in 1994, Rädda mig ur dyn (Rescue me from sinking in the mire, 1994) and Solsången (Sun Song, 1994).

Swedish folk songs are typically ballads accompanied by the fiddle, the nyckelharpa (a keyed fiddle), among other traditional instruments.
Some modern folk musicians, such as Willemark, sing traditional herding calls, (called kulning or lockrop).
A high-pitched vocal technique used mainly by women and dating to the Middle Ages, kulning can be piercing in tone and convey a feeling of melancholy.

Sweden also historically dominate the Scandinavian music scene, with Denmark and Norway listening to music in Swedish rather than the other way around.
Swedish folk song is dominated by ballads and kulning; the latter was originally used as a cow-herding call and is traditionally sung by women, including modern virtuoso Lena Willemark.
Ballad stories descend from skillingtryck printed songs from the 19th century.

If Möller came late to the music of his homeland, Willemark was steeped in it from early childhood, growing up as she did in the mountain forest landscape of the Älvdalen region of mid-west Sweden, where there is a rich, thriving folk culture.
Her teachers included Sväs Marta Eriksson- who taught her singing, folk tales and kulning, the ancient way of calling the cattle up in the mountains - and Erok Anders Andersson whose extraordinary fiddle playing was just one of his many gifts.
It runs from breathing as a rhythmic effect, through husky jazz vocals and scatting, passionate strident shrieking to the penetrating high frequency kulning which is liable to appear in any of her performing contexts" -Andrew Cronshaw, Folk Roots

The album starts with a stunning piece called 'Salmon Dance', starting with a traditional, very intensive Finnish voice style called 'kulning' that is more screaming than singing, the solo scream leading into a modern tune with exciting persussion, violin, Swedish säckpipa (bagpipes) and Ruth's lilting - the parts combining säckpipa and lilting being absolutely fabulous.
The English songs tend to have the style of American songwriting, though they are always telling their part of the Finnish saga.
I was most taken away by the Finnish folk rock pieces with that typical dark flavour, while the 'kulning' pieces are the most impressive ones.
