The castle passed into the possession of the Hosokawa family in 1632 and remained an important stronghold for the Tokugawa shogunate throughout its 250 years of rule, particularly in campaigns against the powerful and independent-minded lords of southern Kyushu.
The castle was reconstructed in 1960 of ferroconcrete, and although it's not nearly as massive as before, it's still quite impressive and remains Kumamoto's star attraction.

DJ and I visited Kumamoto (Coo-mah-mo-toe) on May 21.  It was a long drive from Iwakuni, about 6 hours with stops. 
DJ took this picture from the top of Kumamoto.  I'm hoping that it is a picture of Uto-Yagura.  If that's not what this picture is, we're both retarded for not getting a picture of it!
Uto-Yagura is considered to be the third donjon and "...the turret is one of the original structures of the castle and the only tower to escape destruction during the castle's 400 year history."
