Since the current practice in Uganda is to give an integrated package of services to clients, it is recommended that a large study be carried out to investigate factors limiting provision of health education in prenatal care clinics as a basis for improving delivery of messages especially on family planning.
Currently, 25% of women in Uganda report that their husbands do not approve use of family planning and this is further reflected by the fact that 69% of men prefer to continue having children (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2001).
In Uganda, a hospital is usually based at the headquarters of a district and normally serves a catchment population of about 300,000 people.

Uganda is a country of contradictions.  Although richly endowed with natural resources and great agricultural potential, civil strife and economic mismanagement have hampered its growth.  The country is one of the poorest in the world, according to estimates made by the World Bank, half Ugandans live below the poverty line.
Uganda has a population of approximately 19 million which is predominantly rural-based, 88% of the population living in and deriving its livelihood from rural areas.
The Kumi/ Soroti district in eastern Uganda is a flat, low-lying area with savanna vegetation.  The soils are of low fertility but suitable for the growing of crops like cotton, millet, groundnuts, sorghum, sweet potatoes and cassava.

Uganda is a land-locked country with a surface area of 241,000 square kilometers, of which about 20% is water.
It slopes down to Lake Victoria on the southeast and to the Western Rift Valley that holds Lakes Albert and Edward, and is overlooked by snow-covered peaks and glaciers of the Rwenzori mountains (the mountains are presently the centres of ADF incursions) in the west.

TILLING, Kumi District, Uganda - For most people in this remote village some 360 kilometers northeast of Kampala, the long days and nights when their children easily grew sick and frequently died - all without a clear explanation - are not difficult to recall.
In both Kumi and Soroti Districts, the terrain is mostly flat grassland interrupted sporadically by forests and isolated swamps and served by few paved roads.
The partnership underlying the Uganda project is multilayered: the Canadian Bahá'í community played a key role as a liaison between the CPHA and the Bahá'í community of Uganda, through its Canadian Bahá'í International Development Service (CBIDS).

The diocese of kumi wa curved from the mother diocese of Soroti which consisted pf four districrs that is Soroti, Kaberemaido and Katakwi.
Kumi diocese is composed of three Archdeaconries, with thirty-one parishes and one hundred and forty three sub-parishes.
Kumi happens to be in between Mbale and Soroti district ont eh Eastern region of the province of the church of Uganda.

 The Mothers Union
In November 2003 a Relief Fund grant was sent to the diocese of Kumi to help purchase emergency food supplies, blankets and mosquito nets for the displaced people who had recently arrived from the neighbouring diocese of Soroti.
Although the situation in northern Uganda remains unstable many people are beginning to think of starting to rebuild their lives.
As many people fled their homes without their possessions, the Mothers’ Union in Kumi is helping out with gifts of seeds (groundnuts, millet, sorghum, maize), cassava cuttings, hoes, and domestic items such as pots and pans.

In Kumi, there was inadequate consultation between donor, town council authorities and the beneficiaries on the design of both the water supply and the excreta disposal systems.
In Kumi, the service provider was dependent on user charges for its survival and was remarkably effective both in the collection and management of funds; direct payment for water at the time of collection no doubt helped.
In Uganda, Wobulenzi did not fare any better but Kumi was an exceptional case, with hygiene education being provided by municipal staff (though the quality of the education was not clear).

Uganda is a republic led by President Yoweri Museveni, who continued to dominate the Government following his reelection to a second 5-year term in March 2001.
The father of one of the soldiers subsequently filed a case with the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) and claimed the execution was carried out for political reasons; the case remained pending at year's end.

The exception are the border areas of Katakwi where attacks still occur and people seem to have moved their households inward, away from the border areas.
Even more worrying is the export of this violence into neighbouring districts, particularly Katakwi, where there were over 55 recorded violent attacks by Karamojong in 2001, resulting in the displacement of a third of the population (88,500 people).

The study was conducted in eastern Uganda covering the districts of Pallisa, Kumi and Katakwi, the major cowpea growing areas of the country (Sabiti et al., 1994; Adipala et al., 1997).
For example, on cotton in Uganda, Sekamatte and Heneidy (1997) were able to reduce the number of sprays against cotton pests from 10 to 3, based on action thresholds.

In the case of the Uganda Women’s Efforts to Save Orphans (UWESO) development project, both men and women can qualify for loans, but there can be no more than one man in each five-member group.
The evidence from UWESO in Mbarara, Lira and Kumi, from Uganda Women’s Finance Trust/Swedish International Development Authority (UWFT-SIDA) activities in Homa, and from Private Agencies Collaborating Together (United States) (PACT) in Masindi showed women to be more conscientious about saving, more cautious in borrowing and more disciplined in loan repayment than men.
The frequency with which this happens in Uganda is not known, but some rural finance experts believe that such diversion is common everywhere.

The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) on Tuesday killed Lt-Col Onen Kamdulu, second in command of the Opiro group of the LRA that had been active in Gulu district, during a fierce battle at Kilak Hills in Adjumani district, the semi-official 'New Vision' reported.
As the fourth country (after Uganda, Mauritania and Bolivia) to qualify for debt relief under the HIPC initiative, Tanzania is to benefit from US $1.2 billion relief over 20 years from the International Development Association, the 'soft-loan' arm of the World Bank, an Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) briefing paper stated on Tuesday.

Because of TLM England and Wales’ close relationship with Kumi hospital, we were able to raise and send £37,000 in emergency aid within a few weeks of receiving the email from Dr Opolot.
Continue to repair the existing hospital premises and train staff for general medical services in one of the most impoverished areas of Uganda (51% of the catchment population of Kumi Hospital are under 18 years old; the average life expectancy is 35 years — some 10 years less than in the south of Uganda).
A large part of the challenge will be repairing the water and electricity supply to Kumi, both of which were vandalised and destroy during the previous major outbreak in violence in the early 1990s.

The brutal mutilations and murders of civilians committed by the LRA in northern Uganda have given rise to a large-scale refugee crisis, as yet hardly recognised by the World’s media.
Kumi Hospital was also crowded with refugees, both needing medical attention and hoping the Hospital could provide some food and water.
Kumi Hospital also requests the services of volunteers, both medical (even one month would be valuable) and non-medical with practical skills.

This was revealed by the Kumi District Environment Officer, Ateker Okiria, in an interview with The New Vision recently.
Kumi topped Uganda in terms of forest cover, as contained in the national biomass study report of 1992.
In the sub-counties of Nyero, Atutur and Kumi, trees are mostly cut down for firing bricks, as there is a lot of brick-making going on there.
